That was right at the the time. Both of these have been downgraded from 3.7 (!)

Just look at all the stations near by!!

I'm a few days behind downloading NZ, Chile, Greece and Japan quakes, I should catch up on the weekend, rain is forecast.

Some of you who follow Geonet may have seen this one, which was reported as Felt on the West Coast

22.03.2011 NZ Earthquakes

The centre of the swarm was 15km north west of the 1929 Mag 7.1, on the opposite side of the Taramakau River Valley

Just had a quick look at the latest data since then, nothing else there after the 3.9

Not sure if this is good or bad, the Alpine Fault has been void of quake hits for years, at least anything close to this this number in one day.

On the upside any activity is bound to release some of the built up stress since the last decent quake in that area in 1994 (6.7Mw with 6.1ML aftershock, south of Arthurs Pass)
On the downside, after that swarm of Mag 4's on the 19th at Lake Ohau, and now this, is the Alpine Fault ready to explode with a big one

Not just 4.9

Different completely in Latitude and Longitude and time.

Date/Time UTC,Latitude,Longitude,Magnitude,Depth(Km),Location
2011-03-25T08:28:24.570Z,-43.59491,172.65996,5.3520,5.0413,Cass Bay (GeoNet)

These are about 5 degrees of latitude and longitude off and nearly 10 minutes time-wise and depth by huge amounts. OK the magnitude difference is not really a big deal, but these other differences are.

Who is right? This throws doubt on all figures from USGS/EMSC if they are wrong, and on GeoNet's figures if they are wrong. They need their heads banging together to find out why this is so I am going to start banging.

But before I do, I need the confirmation form a New Zealand member that I am using the correct data because this set is a much closer match yet the magnitude is way off.

UPDATE: The problem for me lies in the fact that GeoNet have not updated their data properly on the lists I get - which are not the same as on the website.

The second quake from NZ that I referenced above is indeed the correct one and the first one no longer exists (it has a different number)

Checking the ID numbers it would seem that the first one should have been deleted BUT the value I have for the second one is under a different number yet in the XML file the magnitude of the first one is correct. The second quake that I have is in the XML, but not on the GeoNet listing and that is a 3.35 as I have shown.

Summat funny going on here I need to investigate how my program is handling this and why the second quake is in the file but not on the GeoNet listing.

So are any of you Quake watchers concerned about that 5.1 that went off on the Sumatra Island of Indonesia that hit south of Lake Toba and within 100miles of it? Or is it normal for a quake that size to strike near a known super volcano?

Been watching north of Australia for a couple of weeks and made a comment somewhere on here that I think the Australian plate is causing what seems like an increase in quake activity in places where quakes are rare. Well after staring at USGS world map, Google Earth and a tectonic plates map, I've come to the conclusion that it is in fact the Sunda Plate which seems to be causing the circular pattern of quakes in the regions of the Phillipines, Indonesia, Timor & Myanmar. This plate seems to be copping it from all sides. Wonder what's happening with it? At first I was thinking 'equatorial' but the rest of the equator is relatively quiet. Surely all the surrounding plates couldn't be reacting on Sunda simultaneously.

Hi all - I answered this question on another thread, but earthquake related info so I'm reposting here (hope that's ok)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

An answer from my dad, seismologist with the USGS:

After shocks:
After a main EQ (the 9.0 in the case of Japan's recent big one), the plates involved continue to adjust to their new states of stress. These adjustments cause more earthquakes--the aftershocks. All other things being equal, and on average, there are lots of aftershocks at first then they slowly die off with time. The falloff is commonly exponential (same formulas as for compound interest only in reverse).

Again on average, within a year of the main EQ, the fault will produce one EQ, one magnitude less than the main EQ. So Northeast Japan could expect an after shock as large as M8, which might cause a smaller Tsunami.

10 aftershocks two magnitudes less (M7)

And 100 aftershocks as large as M6.

and so on down the magnitude scale.

Looks like these two got crossed, swap the magnitudes and depth and everything is sweet

I didn't look at the Ref numbers but I know Cass Bay is in Christchurch so the Lat/Lon is right

Hi,
Has anyone noticed the switch on date for the Large Hadron Collider's proton ion run? I'm not sure if it has been mentioned but there appears to be correlation between re LHC an an increase in seismic activity. Take a look at te LHC wiki page and scroll down to the operations timeline...
can't link as on my phone and apologies if this has already been posted.
Cheers

It looks like there maybe something going on at Grimsfjall volcano.

en.vedur.is...

Although activity isnt really above the norm' for Iceland, it appears to be getting a little interest from the Jon Frimann blog.

I really did think that something was going on at Grímsfjall volcano today. There was something going on. But whatever it was. That does not appear to be volcanic or related to any volcanic activity so far. Most likely this was a change to hydrothermal activity in Grímsfjall volcano or some movement of the ice covering Grímsfjall volcano close to the seismometer on top of Grímsfjall volcano.

And now an update has been posted.

Update: This odd behaviour on Grímsfjall seismometer continues. So I am wondering if the false alarm might not be so false after all. But a eruption is not starting. It lacks the earthquakes of a magma pushing it’s way up the crust. But there is something going on at Grímsfjall volcano. That is for sure.

Its always worth watching when experts are taking note.

I have a question if anyone can answer it for me. Was there anything happening in the world between 3 and 4 am this morning anywhere. Myself and another person on the Arkansas swarm list were awakened by a quake or something, both of us were thinking we were imagining it, but we don't know how to find it or exactly what it was. She said she had checked the Arkansas network and did not see anything on there, but I was awakened by whatever it was too, and my husband and the house did shake a good bit, my dogs went off and my cat landed on top of my chest. Clueless here and trying to figure it out.

I tried this a few years ago but the quality was so bad it wasn't worth the effort.
Thanks to some help from Puterman with a better programme to grab the images in gif format ................

This is the 7 days 17th - 23rd.
I'll do another one shortly showing the run up to the 5.4 on the East Cape yesterday
