If my calculations are correct, 188 days before the Chile quake would have been August 19 2009, which there were no major quakes. The only thing I could find on that day was an odd tornado event in Minnesota..

climate.umn.edu...

And Hurricane Bill..
www.fema.gov...

This FEMA link says that there were no earthquakes, so I guess the 188 day loop started with the Chile earthquake. Its probably coincidence, although a strange one..

ETA: August 24, 2009 is the correct date being 188 days before the Chile quake. Sorry.

My searching on EMSC between the 18th & 24 August 2009 found only a 6.2 south of Fiji on the 18th and a 6.0 in the Norwegian Sea on the 20th. Nothing bigger than those.

Thanks for that info. I went back and counted the days on the calendar and found that I was off on the Aug 19 date. It was the 24th, so it was good that you checked that date.

Now my last thread about the 19th was useless.

Unless someone can figure out a correlation with the 188 days from the Chile quake, then Id mark it up to coincidence. Isn't that comet supposed to be here sometime in Sept?

24th August 2009. Nothing spectacular unfortunately. 5.4 is the biggest

What a day the 20th UTC was in NZ in the end

as well as the 3 x Mag 4 quakes in Otago and the 5.1 at Bromley, Christchurch that Zenius posted earlier in the day and an additional later deep 4.5 n Otago, there was these other 2 high Mag 4's just before the 5.1

MAG, REF, LAT, LONG, UTC DATE/TIME, DEPTH, LOCATION, FELT
4.913, 3481459, -37.96351, 176.24467, 2011/3/20 7:30:13, 250, N of Lake Rotorua, Bay of Plenty, No

March NZ Timeline Graph

Of the 34 quakes found on the 20th, 16 on the Australian Plate and 18 on the Pacific Plate, pretty even numbers wise, I wonder how the balance was energy wise in the battle for supremacy?, do 2 x 4.9's beat a 5.1 and 4 x low 4's

@ Muzzy, yesterday was the first time I watched Geonet all day and after seeing how active it has been I think I'll be watching it more often.

Generally the deeper it is the less chance of it being felt or causing damage at the surface.

Here's some information for you from the USGS.

Q: What is the significance of the depth of an earthquake?

A: Earthquakes occur at depths from near the Earth's surface to about 700 km deep. (See Determining the Depth of an Earthquake.) Below that depth, rocks are too hot and ductile, so they tend to bend and flow rather than break in a brittle manner. The strength of shaking from an earthquake diminishes with increasing distance from the earthquake's source, so the strength of shaking at the surface from an earthquake that occurs at 500km deep is considerably less than if the same earthquake had occurred at 20 km depth.

Also, the depths of earthquakes gives us important information about the Earth's structure and the tectonic setting where the earthquakes are occurring. The most prominent example of this in in subduction zones, where plates are colliding and one plate is being subducted beneath another. By carefully plotting the location and depth of earthquakes associated with a subduction zone, we can see details of the zone's structure, such as how steeply it is dipping, and if the down-going plate is planar or is bending. These details are important because they give us insight into the mechanics and characteristics of the deformation in the subduction zone.

Accurately determining the depth of an earthquake is typically more challenging than determining its location, unless there happens to be a seismic station close and above the epicenter. So generally, errors on depth determinations are somewhat greater than on location determinations.

So if an earthquake registers 5.0 but it is 500 miles below the surface, it wont be felt nearly as much as one that was only 5 miles beneath the surface?

From where do they take the measurements that determine the Richter reading?

Correct.

Read the FAQ links in my post above yours. You will find answers to your questions.

It would seem like things overall have calmed down. Japan is still moving, and there's the usual assortment of quakes in the Pacific. There's only been one above 5.5M. And that's in Asia at 5.8M.

I'm wondering if the Indian Plate is showing signs of stress. Afghanistan and Iran would be areas to watch. If the Indian Plate decides to move, it will be a large event. I'd put a long-shot bet on the Himalayas jumped up a foot or two.

Drats it missed the Ex by 100 miles -

Long Weekend and so glad to be back home (laptop died while away - go figure) - the supermoon here on the East Coast was SUPER (for the first hours after rising)!! Glad I didn't miss out on anything big while away. The window is until the 26th if I not mistaken. I have this god aweful headache now for 3 days (unfortunatly not cocktail induced). Hoping it is just a weather thing and not the earthquake one. -

A clue may be found in the map of the quake. If you look on google maps, just north of the quake there is a giant tailings reservoir. There's mining in the area.
