MAP 5.0 2011/03/17 19:05:44 36.191 141.750 36.5 NEAR THE EAST COAST OF HONSHU, JAPAN
MAP 5.6 2011/03/17 18:55:38 37.175 142.291 29.8 OFF THE EAST COAST OF HONSHU, JAPAN

I know my GMT time settings are off, but the usgs sites shows my local time. And according to those timestamps it really quite all of a sudden? up until 19:00 hours there was a 2 quake minimum per hour. Not it's 21:12 local time in the Netherlands, and the last quake was 19:05 Local time. Is this an indication of pressure building up? or are these quite moments normal?

Hi, just popping in to post this, apologies if it has already been linked here.

Not saying this in any way indicates pending quake activity but who knows; there seems to be increasing correlation between mass marine life beachings/deaths and subsequent quake activity in recent times.

Anyway, news report today on 30 pilot whales stranded on Tasmania.

Thank you. I don't have a clue to any technical stuff, but am really interested in keeping track of earthquakes, especially Yellowstone...

How do you determine if it is a quake or a glitch????

Hi, just found your earthquake thread, fantastic !

I have been monitoring the USGS page since last week and is it normal for there to be so many quakes all around the ring of fire? There was a 6.3 in VANUATU last night, right on the fault line.
And then another 6.1 just down the fault line..

They are happening so frequently and are deep, like the main one last friday. So if ive got this correct, the more deep quakes there are around the ring of fire is that more of a chance that the whole fault will just drop again?

If so that would be catastrophic

I wish i had followed this more closely before.

Was there an earthquake in the Maryland/DC area today?

Saw a friend's facebook posting claiming they felt something, but I haven't seen anything listed on my quakefeed.

Just curious.

This isn't far from me and it wasn't even enough for me to feel it, but what is alarming to me is that there has never been a recorded earthquake in that area. Sure, it's only a 2.6, however, it's the timing of it all that makes me think something is taking place with our planet,

Earthquakes are unusual for Mahoning County. The Ohio Seismic Network has no record of an earthquake in or near Youngstown in 200 years of record keeping.

No actually its been going on for millions of years.
Quite normal, although they do have quiet periods sometimes.
Those islands are volcanic

No they are not, do some research.
All that is increasing is people awareness of them

Another chain of volcanic islands.
All quite normal, they get a lot of 5's, 6's and one of the most consistant areas for 7's (at least in the last 100 years)
Bit of a small drawn out swarm going on right now over the last few days, doesn't mean anything bigger is imminent, they may die away and a 7 come in a week/months/months or so and maybe even another swarm before that.

SWARM ~ Earthquake swarms are events where a local area experiences sequences of many earthquakes striking in a relatively short period of time

I am very confused. For some reason, there is no record of it on my USGS map. I guess it's an ophan quake. Unwanted and unloved. I'll adopt it. My map is supposed to have all USA 2.5+. Are not the states united?

earthquake.usgs.gov...

Here's a funnier thing, it's on my Canada map. Maybe Ohio is going to secede from the union.

earthquakescanada.nrcan.gc.ca...

It's not listed. But it shows up at least.

Welcome to our world - and that's how it all starts :-) Couldn't have said it better when I was just starting out all those years ago myself.

Berkland - yeah - I'm on the edge of my seat... Darn the bad luck though I have to go out of state tomorrow until Sunday and don't know how much I'll be able to be on watching -- well, only if I can't find wifi - otherwise, I'll be the one at the anniversary party sitting in the corner with my laptop asking the waitress to fill my glass and telling everyone else to please just go away and have a good time and let me have mine

Well for me I tell by listening to it. That is the proof as far as I am concerned.

Most of these I recognise now but I always listen if I am not sure.

2006-01-05: M=2.8 near Cleveland , OH

Earthquake Information
Thursday January 05, 2006
Local Time: 22:02:04 EST
Magnitude: 2.8 MN
Latitude: 41.8 North
Longitude: 81.38 West
UT Date
and Time: 2006-01-06
03:02:04 UT

That can't be it Robin, that is 2006! That does rather make nonsense of the "hasn't been one recorded in 200 years" bit though.

Having said that I can't find it either however.

Link to Ohio seismic network event

Can't see anything significant in the immediate area but the imagery date is 2004.

The name might give a clue however. Salt springs? Salt domes = Oil/Gas

CLEVELAND, OH -- The Northeast Ohio Gas Accountability Project, NEOGAP, a non-profit, citizen-based organization committed to protecting public health from the impacts of irresponsible natural gas drilling, announced today that a recent report on Ohio's regulations for management of hydraulic fracturing (sometimes called "fracking") is both flawed and misleading.

Sounds like fracking to me!

Since I can't find the quake I can't check that.

I did find it's location, see above.
