You could send them to the World 7+ project or to the NZ Historical 5+ quakes web pages that I have been doing for a few years now, I'm getting about 150 hits PER DAY now since the Christchurch quake, and the 7 Days page for NZ getting 60 odd hits on a regular basis.
There you /they will see there is nothing out of the ordinary at all.
The difference with NZ now is that the quakes are close to (right under) heavily populated centres, whereas in the past they were out in the boonies, Fiordland or way out on the Hikurangi/ Kermadec ridge, etc.

Have you got reinforcing steel in those breeze blocks

Thanks Muzzy - we "think" there are steel rods through the breeze-block - was built by an architect in 1976 (wacky design) see pic below. Unfortunately the building records are half missing at the council
and there isn't even a floor plan lodged with them so we had to draw our own etc.

Anyhoo.. I'm constantly on GeoNet FB site telling them the activity (bar Canterbury) is normal in NZ. I think the trouble is I've been fending off too many Moon Man followers
and during that time those bloody 6's went off all round Ken's ring.. sorry, the Ring of Fire and then (not unusual) 7.2 in Japan and then Hawaii and then China and.. and... and I;m a bit emotional and scared myself *looks out of window at the alps*.. so I think I just got my knickers in a twist... I've been watching your websites, and I've sent links to friends, it's good stuff. You've got another 7 to add now with Japan?

Hope you've got good bandwidth because I've just plastered your 7+ and NZ Historics on Geonet FB link list and on my Quake Watch FB page

Feel better for the rant and all the replies though

House:

First pic gives you an idea of just how many exterior walls we have - half is breeze block, half are top to floor glass, and the height of those walls (breeze block).

[atsimg]http://files.abovetopsecret.com/images/member/ec92ee21cdb4.jpg[/atsimg]

These two pics give you an idea of the beams and the height of the walls (taken while renovating). The one with the decorators in is the bedroom - guy is standing on a chair to give you an idea of heights.

The one of the lounge shows the window arrangements and height (sofa is huge, but looks tiny cos of the room dimensions).

As long as there is steel in the blocks you shouln't have any walls fall down, even if they are quite high. And as long as those beams are tied into the walls they shouldn't fall down either.
Hopefully you have a steel tile roof?
Concrete or Clay tile roofs seemed to cause a lot of internal damage in both Chch quakes.
We have concrete tile, weights about 8 tons

I sure hope so - I guess we'll find out one day!!!
We have a few hairline cracks from the 7.1 - the tall walls must have wobbled a lot as the flat rooves above the corridors that join each "pod" of the house were all compressed and cracked/broken.

Yes.. we have formed galvanized steel rooves, thank god, otherwise the amount of tile would be enormous.

Well, I feel somewhat more confident in the structure now. Thank you

Best wishes Moorf.
I feel your pain.
These are trying times and we must do what needs to be done to get through this,

And now they have to contend with the aftershocks which will be huge!
