It's possible the 5.8 was a foreshock- but I doubt it. This has all the classic signs of a mainshock/aftershock sequence. So you can probably expect a few aftershocks in the 4 range, and more in the 3 and 2 range. It's pretty much what we've been seeing.

If a bigger one happens at this point, it will surprise all but the most apocalyptic-viewed of scientists.

I wouldn't worry too much.

Thats good to know. im not at all worried just a bit of excited energy from the strange newness of it all. A quick note od possible interest though. my pets are not freaking out this time. yest my kitty was walking around real low to the ground for a while but my dog was not upset at all. not what i would have guessed.

The afternoon before the 7.1 here both my dogs threw up several times and looked wobbly on their feet and were sheepish. I had no clue at the time why and was prepared to take them to vet the next day,. they had never done it before or since. Less than 12 hrs later the quake hit..

The best of the LISS images to see microseisms in the Atlantic is Tristan da Cunha. It is the first one on my 'home' page

You can see the microseisms on that one.

@angelchemuel said: Magnitude mb 5.8

USGS is calling it (for now) a 6.2???

Always look on the bright side of life (love that tune) at the type of magnitude. The USGS is 6.2 Mw.

Having said that EMSC bless their little cotton socks are now calling it a 6.2 Mw as well as AC pointed out. Must keep up with the Massah

Scientists, you gotta love 'em.

Had a look for RGRS which had 7.9 too, I have this, RGRS CSC 32.9075 -80.1942 -52 Roger Stewart
and day 236 , what the heck is this at 00:06

Have to say I am completely stumped on that one. You put up the EH1 channel, but it is slightly stronger on the Z channel: RGR.CO.00.EHZ.2011.236

The REALLY odd thing is that just 22 and 14 km away are two moe stations which hardly register it.

14.3 km CSB.CO.00.EHZ.2011.236 and 22.2 Km NHSC.US.00.BHZ.2011.236

BUT setting the screen scale the same the NHSC one looks like this

Not as strong as RGR but still visible. The CSB instrument is actually 0.00034 scale against 0.01 for those other two. It just destroys the plot if i try and set CSB to that scale, but it will take 0.001 so comparing them all at 0.001

CSB

RGR

NHSC

With NHSC being broadband 40 Hz sample rate and the other two E channels @ 100 Hz sample rate I am not sure we can count NHSC so that actually places the event closer to CSB despite what it may first appear.

So going further out we have JSC.CO.00.HHZ.2011.236 - Jenknsville - North of the others
Putting that one on to the same scale we are getting colder (that is also 100 Hz sps)

The largest structure that seems to encompass these criteria is dam

but definitely laced with panic induced fear.

or fear induced panic perhaps?

or maybe just panic!

I know i should not say this and would not wish an earthquake on any one but I actually have no idea what any of you are on about. I have never felt an earthquake in my life so have no experience of it at all. I would like to feel one at least once!

On RT....
"Experts are looking for a reason behind Tuesday afternoon’s unlikely 5.8 magnitude earthquake that shook people up and down the East Coast, and some are saying that a recent rise in fracking could be the culprit.
Hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking,” is the man-made splintering of underground rocks to expedite the exploiting of natural resources. It’s become a widespread phenomenon since its introduction in 2004, and though the practice can help increase supplies of oil and gas without reaching out internationally for imports, the result it can have on the geological make-up of the Earth can be ravaging. Now some experts say the rise in fracking could be to blame for yesterday’s quake."

As much as I am steadfastly against fracking, I am not so sure about this.

In my opinion .....Anytime you drill into the Earth, take from it oil and replace the oil with water....there is going to be problems. All that we are doing inside the Earth (Spain and New York) is absolutely stupid. We are messing with the "mechanics". We can live on this Planet and take care of it or we can continue to destroy it from the inside. It is a choice....."they" are making the wrong choice and we are the ones to suffer.

This is all my opinion of course.

Is this another one? Or are you posting it because they possibly upgraded it? I just looked on USGS and not getting anything other than the latest 5.8

OOPS...I see now.

Fracking.

Did fracking cause the Virginia earthquake?
I explained my thoughts fully on Westcoast's thread. Fracking did not directly cause the quake.
There are no fracking operations near the epicenter.

But, the Arkansas swarm which was caused by injection wells did cause this quake. But there will be no proof.
The fault in Akransas put pressure on the Virginia fault system.

I've been saying for a long time that the quakes in the northeast come in clusters. Sure enough, after the Virginia quake, which was felt in New York, enough to sway buildings, we have quakes in New York. They are related to the quakes in Virginia, and they are related to Arkansas.

Now that has to be the most ironic statement I ever heard! Our Quake expert (and I wouldn't be surprised if USGS doesn't call you now and then for advice) has never been in an earthquake!?!? I think the least ATS could is send you to Japan for on-the-job-training! Better yet Hawaii!
