Anyone having trouble with the phone lines in VA?? I cant make calls on my cellphone or my land line.

Im sure the circuits are busy, but I was able to make one as soon as the shaking stopped.

I am a California, and earthquake veteran, living in Southwestern VA - and sure felt that one.

My question for the scientifically astute earthquake buffs is the depth - USGS reporting at 1 Km? I have never heard/seen such a shallow one? Thoughts?

Anyone else have pets acting oddly?

Yep, Lab still unsettled and barking at nothing and grunting. He is to old to get very excited and has problems walking. Most I heard him in long while.

I realize that the first time a quake is experienced it can be quite disturbing. With the remotely possible exception of historic unreinforced brick buildings close to or on top of the epicenter - a 5.8 is strong enough to get your attention but not cause damage.

So instead of figuring out who all felt the earthquake and where they were located. We should just be silent, and not use the quake watch thread?

Just had this message on my ipad earthquake notification.
Due to the recent earthquakes in Virginia our systems located there are experiencing a temporary slowdown. We are working to reroute all traffic at this time.

Economic losses are YELLOW on the PAGER alert which indicates a level of damage.

Some damage is possible and the impact should be relatively localized. Estimated economic losses are less than 1% of GDP of the United States. Past events with this alert level have required a local or regional level response. Green alert level for shaking-related fatalities. There is a low likelihood of casualties.

earthquake.usgs.gov...

Fatalities are GREEN so hopefully there will be none.

Can't get the full page up so this TV map of shae intensity will have to do

Maybe not but here is a little fearmongering.

What if it was a pre-quake?

The pre-earthquake to the large Mw8.9 earthquake was a Mw7.2Source

If so and it got same increase you might get a Mw7,5+ in "the real" quake.

Can the ATS gurus of earthquake knowledge help us with a couple of questions -

Does the combination of unusual earthquake in Colorado this am, and the earthquake in VA this pm, raise concerns?

Is the extremely shallow depth of the VA quake reveal anything interesting? (I saw reports initially of 6 km, then 1km).

Thanks for your input!!!
