We lost (the Rugby) 18-5

This is where the Russians fall down, they are not reporting the aftershocks/ smaller quakes in the "swarm".

Lets just look at the series in mb (seeing as at > 6.5mb the siesmos shouldn't be saturated and mb still apply)

how far is that 3rd one from being a 7.0Mw eh

Impossible to split these into two or more quakes on SNZO, maybe it will be clearer when the traces move up higher in the graph later in the day.
The Radio News here is still saying it was a 7.5 amd a 7.2.

Take a look at this muzzy. I have pulled the scale way back on this plot so you can actually see what is happeneing. This is G.DZM about 450 Km from the events. See how MUCH smaller the second one is?

DZM.G.00.BHZ.2011.232

Seeing as how it was shallower than the 7.1, albeit not by much, I would have expected fairly similar signatures.

Just for a laugh take a look at this one which is only 290 Km from the event. Can you see either quake? Eh

Great, I'll save that page.HAndy to pick up some text to add to my tags.

So the Hawaii Tsunami Centre again proves it just isn't worth the funding, issuing incorrect reports again, scaring ( or not warning in this case) the public

Muzzy...we need (or I do anyway) lol ......you and Puterman to share thoughts on these. I know right now it is all technical but as time goes by please share your thoughts with us regarding specifics like...

Is it purely tectonic, is it volcanic,,,,is it just an eq lol and...what do you see coming next if anything.

There has got to be a why and what now forming in your thought range?? Maybe a little? It is me..and just wanting your and Puterman's thoughts. ;-)

Thanks!!! xoxoxox

Too enthusiastic to get the data I didn't check the times on RAS, they hadn't listed the 2nd Mag 7 at that stage.

(on that same link) now updated the 2nd quake was bigger than the 1st in mb but less in Ms

Oh I give up lets call it

2 "very strong" quakes Vanuatu, the first causing a 1m high tsunami at Efate

There

Tectonic and Volcanic go together in this region because the volcanos ( the Vanuatu islands themselves) are so close to the Plate Margin (Subduction Zone)

So the Australian Plate slips under the Pacific Plate at the New Hebrides Trench ( BTW Vanuatu used to called The New Hebrides Islands) or the PP slips over the AP depending on what theory you follow, its a very complex corner of the Australian Plate.
Subduction usually means there are volcanos on the overlaying Plate.

I don't think these quakes are caused by the Volcanos themselves, Mag 7's are not normally what you get when a volcano is about to erupt, its usally a lot of smaller quakes like multiple Mag 4's in a short space of time.
Having said that, Yasur volcano on Erromango Island which is an active volcano is only 123 miles to the SE of these quakes, so there is an outside possibility there may be some new activity there in the coming days/months
You can keep one eye on here, John Seach's site is one of the best at keeping up to date what is erupting at any given time

edit on 20-8-2011 by muzzy because: to add the link, just because I had the tab open on my computer doesn't mean you can see the page

edit on 20-8-2011 by muzzy because: got Yasur confused with Traitors Head on Tanna Is. Yasur is 123miles away, not 81.

Ahhhh...yes...that is what I needed. Thank you so much! I will go and venture off of here and check out the link. I was not sure if there was any volcanic activity associated to this one or not...good to know the other information. I will of course stay tuned here and also check out that link....THANKS again! ;-)
