USGS revised depth and magnitude 3 times now.

same quake, with sequence of revisions as the website updated from USGS feed.

Not sure about that. Those are not the same as the quakes on Hierro

El Hierro seismogram for 27th

IU.MACI which is on Tenerife does not seem to ne showing much on the HHZ channel MACI.IU..HHZ.2011.208 so it is difficult to say what those are but (and I cannot confirm this without listening) they look very similar to the signature one sees when there is solar activity. This does seem to have a habit of affecting certain instruments and not others and may be to do with the transmission links in use.

I may be completely off the mark there, but the spectrum from that instrument here suggests to me that this is the case.

ETA: If you click back through the pages - I went back to the start of July - it is not an uncommon signal on that instrument.

Indeed.

You can see the start of the swarm at El Hierro on this one

My thanks to you for the link. It was one that was not in my list. I have the earthquake side but had not discovered that the seismograms came under the volcano section.

Now included on the seisomgrams page.

A new study just released! Interesting indeed.

The Olympic Peninsula in Washington State, USA, and British Columbia, Canada, could be among the hardest hit locations in the event of a future megathrust earthquake along the Pacific coast.
A new study led by Simon Fraser University earth scientist Andy Calvert and published in Nature Geoscience this week indicates the depth of the fault between the two tectonic plates forming the Earth’s surface in the Pacific Northwest is seven kilometres deeper than previously proposed.

Calvert speculates it may mean part of the fault’s locked zone — where a megathrust earthquake can occur — could be beneath the Olympic Peninsula.

This I find very interesting

The section runs north-south from Victoria on Vancouver Island to southern Washington state. Scientists call it a transient slip zone because the fault between two plates slips gradually every 14 months or so. This gradual slip takes place over a two-week period and triggers tremors that are so small people don’t notice them.

What happenes every 14 months for only two weeks that trigger these tremors? Is it a 2 month lag time for full rotation of the earth around the sun?

Full Article

P.S. - I am getting the hebe jebe's from what is happening in the Canary Islands. Puterman, I hope you can find an instrument where you can get a listen!!!! I hope that in a short while They will give us more instruments as it appears they are very concerned as well. Tremor plots would be welcome.

Thank you Anmarie!!!! (I'm stealing this article for my other thread, BTW...
)

What is interesting about those deep tremors, is that for the past year that I have been watching them, they occur almost daily. There is a much larger cluster every 14 months or so, but the tremors are pretty much always going. Yesterday for example, there were around 130 of them smack-dab on the Olympic Peninsula. There was also a 42 km deep 3.7 quake there earlier this week...

I have always been aware and obviously concerned about a mega quake happening near me and realized that the zone was most likely under the peninsula vs off the coast..BUT. Until this last quake, I didn't realize just how close it was. That 3.7 was 69 miles from my house. If that had been the mega thrust...well.

ETA: I had a theory out there somewhere at one time about the timing of these tremors. I speculated whether it could have anything to do with the suspected magma chamber sitting under a large portion of the state. My thought, was that depending on the vicousness (sp?) of the magma...what if the tremors were associated with the ebb and flow? Don't know if that makes any sense, but if there is a huge sea of semi-solid magma under us, I think it would make sense that there may be some very slow, wave-like movement associated with it. Just a random thought.

Man... I got some crazy P waves from what has to be this quake (5.9 atlantic ridge). I don't get it. In all my time watching GEE I've never seen the P waves this big from something under a 6 mag, and this has to be the second round? (2nd wave)...because I just came back to my computer and saw it and immediately pulled up USGS expecting a big one somewhere.

Same thing happened with the quake in the gulf, also a 5.9.

I know the information to the questions I have is somewhere in the 100's of pages but could someone please help?

1. Appx. how many earthquakes happen every day?
2. Are the earthquakes we are seeing getting larger?

I am new to this topic and find the information overwhelming but informative.

I don't hang out around this thread much, but my understanding is a WHOLE LOT of earthquakes happen each day. 100's to 1000's

As for intensity, from my understanding is, for the most part, nothing that new. But I'm sure if I'm wrong someone will come by and correct me.

Bigger quakes during past few days reduced. Nothing strange.
At the same time the solar activity increased; at present more than 40x B8.0 Plus flares between 27 to 29 July.

Thus the observation Putterman made before that increase solar activity often coresponds with reduced earthquakes.

Is it possible that Cosmic radiation (higher in high-energy particles) might be the culprit that causes heat/movement in Earth Core? With increased solar activity the solar radiation is strengthening the Heliopause/Heliosphere thus reducing (or at least stronger resistance to) incoming cosmic radiation.

As thenewguy1987 correctly stated - thousands a day and no, no real increase is observable over and above the normal cycles, if you look at proper data and stay away from scaremongering sites that twist things to they way they want them. As the saying goes there's lies, there's damned lies and then there's statistics.

Here is the rough guide to the number of quakes yearly

I think you may find this thread a bit useful in regards to the Suns radiation and its effects here on Earth. .The Russians seem to think there will be even more loss of life as the Sun is active and does indeed cause EQ's and Volcanic activity......Of course USGS is not in the "know" as of yet.....maybe they will quickly get on board of what to me seems to be common sense.
