Relatively quiet with medium and bigger (3 to 5) quakes.

I wonder: Is anybody else here keeping an eye on the Sun too?

See also the sun is abnormally flat-line - like near dead!

I'm hoping someone on here will know the answer to this.

In the film 2012, (yes , i have seen it.).. is there any scientific credence to the whole idea of the sun super heating the interior of the earth? So that the crust becomes less stable?

BTW, I don't subscribe to the 2012 nonsense..... just asking out of curiosity. And if it is possible, how would you measure something like this?

Depends where you are looking at, we had 10 Mag 3 quakes yesterday in NZ

Just so you know 3 to 5 is "minor" to "moderate", sometimes 3 is called "slight" as in the Mercalli scale

The descriptions vary a bit beyond 6.9 but this is the key I use for my maps
Less than 2.0 Micro About 8,000 per day globally
2.0–2.9 Very Minor About 1,000 per day globally
3.0–3.9 Minor 49,000 per year (est.)
4.0–4.9 Light . 6,200 per year (est.)
5.0–5.9 Moderate . 800 per year globally
6.0–6.9 Strong 120 per year globally
7.0–7.9 Very Strong 18 -25 per year globally
8.0–8.9 Major 1 per year globally
9.0–9.9 Great 1 per 20 years globally
10.0+ Massive Extremely rare (Unknown)

they are just a guide, a lot depnds on individual depths, look at Spain, you'd hardly call a 5.0-5.3 quake that destroys a entire town "moderate"

Thanks muzzy; the scale is good.

My interest in earthquakes is more from Astrophysics point, therefore Earth view is wide spectrum. With not-so-normal quakes I do take a more in depth look. Contrary to most, I do well believe the sun/cosmos is often responsible for much of the quakes and on this the little bits of data I have does point true North.

you are very possibly correct. The Sun's activity is stimulated by Cosmic activity. Then the Cosmos directly and via the Sun is cooking the Earth - microwave, neutron, neutrino, pressure.

Right now the solar is still flat-lining and 'one-blink-view' of earthquakes on the map also indicates more quakes but less moderate ones. When we come out of this planetary alignment, maybe early to mid June I think is where we are going to have jumping paw-paws (or is it coconuts)

Real scary thoughts from Dr. Patane linking Lorca with most volcanoes in the Med. The maths there does make me very happy to live in Thailand.

I feel for the poor people of Sendai doesn't seem a moment goes bye without another quake but another 6.2 and close to the coast. It seems like for these people its never going to end

Did you get a reply - does not look like it.

Software is the answer. Believe me if you could see the heap of s**t I have been ploughing through this evening you would seriously wonder how they work anything out at all. The s**t in question is programs for reading SEED, MSEED, SAC and other formats such as SEISAN. They are mostly all run in Unix or Linux, or on MACs. If you download one for Windows you have to find a compiler such as Watcom to compile it and believe me when I say I was using Watcom many many years ago. It has an interface from the days of Windows 98! and was born out of compilers even older than that.

You can put all sorts of divers switches on command lines to make it do various things, none of it standard as far as I can see. Expand that to the packages I just read up tonight about interfacing to seismometers and you find they are about the same. It is like a bunch of geeks playing with command line toys.

Looking at the mags over distance for Costa Rica is quite interesting. The average of the magnitude tails away as it gets further way (makes sense) but there was one station at Mag 9.1 and one @ mag 3.6



The average of that lot is much closer to the EMSC estimate @ mag 5.58 (5.4 > 5.58 < 6.0)

Interestingly again the average @ mag 5.649 is closer to EMSC. (5.6 > 5.649 < 6.2)

This definitely looks lower than a 6.0

Its the old Mw versus mb conflict again, USGS are saying in Mw, EMSC are in mb.
Had a look inside USGS data, those two quakes were both 5.6 mb

I'd stick to mb right across the board if it wasn't for the fact EMSC often just give Mw and offer no other types, but they do use mb in their phase data.

Something is being lost in the conversion, that makes the quakes sound bigger than they really were.

Guys and gals...
I have not heard of any reports of damage in Costa Rica.(San Jose).
Have any of you seen or have info of any reported damage?
I have friends there and have not been able to get in touch with them yet.

They come up with this (BS) GS magnitude. Now EMSC are showing it as 5.9 Mb yet USGS are still showing it as 5.6 Mb as they originally had it. So now on Mb the two are apart from each other.

I would hate to put these "scientists" in charge of anything serious! In many ways it is a good job they have no control over earthquakes.

It gets better!

What EMSC have done is change to Mw. This does not come through on my database as I don't examine the magnitude type after it has been entered (note to self: fix this stupid)

For Costa Rica this is 5.9 Mw they are showing

Add to say: They brought the Mw version in with a new earthquake ID which now means I have it twice. So far they have not deleted the old one in the KML listings. We shall see.
