I for one didn't see that, I was making sandwiches for lunch at the time, had to work today

Nice graph on SNZO right now, shows the difference between a 5.3 and a 6.3 quite distinctly, of course the 6.3 was 8 times the distance from Wellington as the 5.3 in Chch.

Viewing USGS map zoomed to Australian Map; I notice a wide placed series of very shallow quakes all along the edge of the Autralian plate; on the exact fault lines. Loyalty islands seems to be themost active (Yes, usually is but last 24 hours had three?) Just fresh while typing here another 4.9 on almost same spot; but 20 Km deeper.

Curious note on selected quakes:
10 May 08h55 UTC = 6.8 Loyalty islands (Downgraded from original 7.1) Shallow
09 May 18h54 UTC = 6.3 West from Macquarie
09 May 15h04 UTC = 5.0 South island of NZ Shallow
07 May 12h03 UTC = 5.0 Mid-Indian Ridge Shallow
04 May 04h50 UTC = Western Indian-Atlantic Ridge Shallow

Is the whole Australian plate moving like a cap?

EDIT: Additional at Loyalty islands (About 130 km from Vanuatu)
10 May 10h14 UTC = 4.9 Loyalty Islands 35.3 Km deep
10 May 10h24 UTC = 5.7 Loyalty Islands 35.8 Km deep

The odd one out on your list is the South Is. NZ one, thats on the Pacific Plate.
Yes the Australian Plate seems to be on the move again
earthquake.usgs.gov...

Interesting observation though.

If this is correct (Au Plate moving), it suggests that the Christchurch quakes are being caused by subduction from the West (Au Plate subducting under Fiordland and the Southern Alps) rather than from the East (Hikaurangi Trench) as happens north of Kaikoura.

Is it just me or does this Loyalty Is. activity resemble what happened prior to the event off of Honshu?

I remember a series of 4's in that area followed by that 7.2(maybe 7.6 ?) then a series of 5's then the massive 9.0.

Is something building down there, is it just still stresses readjusting, or is it unrelated entirely?

I get the impression that the whole pacific ring area is becoming more turbulent. I could be wrong but today has seen some very heavy activity, and it's not just 2's n 3's.

All this activity around the ring of fire sure is making me feel uneasy, I think this is due to all the May 11th predictions and so on. I will be glad when the 12th arrives!
edit on 10/5/11 by boo1981 because: I am very aware that the ring of fire is a very active area, but one does get abit worried some times!

If there is a "mega-quake" anywhere in the world tomorrow, not just Rome, then I will starting worrying. Big style. Also, I'm allowing a few days for give or take.

I'm thinking the same as you.
Normally I don't see as many large red squares on the USGS quake map all in the same day.
But i've only been visiting the site for about 4 years and thats nothing compared to some of the more dedicated members here.
Who I hope can put my mind as easy???

It depends on depth and distance as well. I can assure you that M3 quakes can be felt, quite often, damnit!
