Tremors decrease at Anak Krakatau but volcano still emitting thick smoke

December 17, 2011 – INDONESIA – Seismic tremors at Anak Krakatau have decreased from about a thousand a day down to around 550. Indonesian officials said the mountain summit, however, is still trembling violently and the volcano is still emitting a dense low-lying cloud of smoke. Geologists say the cloud emissions from Anak Krakatau have reached about 100 meters in height. The Geological Disaster Mitigation agency in Indonesia said the volcano remains on Level 3 alert and the 2 kilometer exclusion zone around the volcano remains in place. –Media Indonesia translated

This is not good in my view as a drop in seismic tremors could portend an eruption. It does however depend on whether the tremors previously were magmatic in nature.

December 17, 2011 – INDONESIA – The alert level of Ijen volcano in East Java has been raised to alert/unrest (2 out of 4) due to increased seismic activity and increased temperatures and fumaroles inside the crater, famous for its turquoise acid lake and the sulfur deposits, which are being quarried by workers. In exclusion zone of 1 km around the crater has been established. Workers and tourists are currently not allowed to go inside the crater. The last time Ijen erupted was in 1999. –Volcano Discovery

CBC: The heat generated by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79 was believed to have reached temperatures approaching 400 degrees Celsius.

At some point, yes, it was 400C. However, when the ash and tephra erupts, it is closer to 700-800C (or more).

CBC: That was hot enough to boil the brains of people caught in the lava flow and blow the tops of their heads off.

The 5-km-long Jebel Zubair Island is the largest of a group of 10 small islands and submerged shoals that rise from a shallow platform in the Red Sea rift. The platform and eruptive vents forming the islands and shoals are oriented NNW-SSE, parallel to the rift. An early explosive phase was followed by a brief period of marine erosion, and then by renewed explosive activity accompanied by the extrusion of basaltic pahoehoe lava flows. This latest phase of activity occurred on the morphologically youngest islands of Zubair, Centre Peak, Saba, and Haycock. Historical explosive activity was reported from Saddle Island in the 19th century. Spatter cones and pyroclastic cones were erupted along fissures that form the low spine of Zubair Island.

Hundreds Of People Flee As Volcano’s Lava Flood Kills 4 In Eastern Indonesia
By Associated Press, Wednesday, December 28, 12:59 AM

TERNATE, Indonesia — Officials say fast-moving mudflows streaming from the mouth of a volcano in eastern Indonesia have killed four villagers. About 1,000 others have fled their homes.

Mount Gamalama, located in the Molucca Islands, sprang back to life this month with a powerful, non-fatal eruption.

Government spokesman Yusuf Sunnya said Wednesday that days of heavy rains triggered flows of cold lava, rocks and other debris that slammed into villages near the base Tuesday night.

Air Traffic Alert After Alaskan Volcano Spews Ash Cloud
www.reuters.com...
By Yereth Rosen
ANCHORAGE, Alaska | Thu Dec 29, 2011 7:24pm EST

(Reuters) - A remote volcano in Alaska's Aleutian islands erupted early on Thursday, spouting an ash cloud 15,000 feet into the sky and prompting an air-traffic alert, scientists said.

The Cleveland Volcano, located on an uninhabited island 940 miles southwest of Anchorage, had been oozing lava and gas since July.

Ash from the 5,676-foot (1,730 meter) volcano is considered potentially dangerous to aircraft because Cleveland's peak lies directly below commercial flight routes between Asia and North America. Additional explosions producing larger ash clouds are possible and could come without warning, the observatory said.
