Kosovo PM is head of human organ and arms ring, Council of Europe reports

www.guardian.co.uk

Kosovo's prime minister is the head of a "mafia-like" Albanian group responsible for smuggling weapons, drugs and human organs through eastern Europe, according to a Council of Europe inquiry report on organised crime.

Hashim Thaçi is identified as the boss of a network that began operating criminal rackets in the runup to the 1998-99 Kosovo war, and has held powerful sway over the country's government since.

This is an interesting story coming out of the European Union about Kosovo’s Prime Minister who is alleged to essentially be running the Government there as a mafia like criminal enterprise.

Hashim Thaci has more or less been the power within the Kosovo government since the United Nations/NATO military action in the 1990’s to stop Slobodan Milosevic’s Serbian military expansion into the small nation that was targeting ethnic Albanians much the way the Serbs were targeting ethnic Muslims in Bosnia Herzegovina before.

While the International Community was slow to respond to the chaos and power struggles in the wake of the break up of the ethnically diverse Yugoslavia ruled with an iron fist by Josip Broz Tito from the end of World War II to 1980, by at first just passing sanctions to keep weapons and aide from flowing into the war zones as the Croats, Serbs, Bosnians and Kosovo factions all struggled to maintain autonomy, one has to wonder when the arms and money are cut off through ‘legitimate’ forces, if this just ends up playing into the hands of the more serious criminal elements who have the contacts, skills and expertise to get around that.

More importantly as we look at Kosovo but places like Iraq and Afghanistan too, still mired in it’s own forms of sectarian and religious violence, is international gerrymandering through group ‘police actions’ that aim at regime change really producing a better regime and life for the people who live there?

Kosovo’s Thaci is linked to organ trafficking, heroin trafficking, weapons trafficking and other alleged crimes, while Karzai’s brother in Afghanistan is alleged to be the nation’s top heroin trafficker, and the Iraqi government is alleged to be rife with corruption.

As with Iraq’s Saddam Hussein, and Panama’s Manuel Noriega are we embracing thugs one day for political convenience and the benefit of corporations being able to expand and maintain markets, just to find at some point the same people we helped into power to obtain our goals, are now an embarrassment or no longer playing ball like we want, and then having to remove them all over again.

It becomes a valid question, when in most cases like Thaci’s they were criminals when we helped put them into office.

It also seems that national self determination and sovereignty is becoming a thing of the past, as collectives of nations become more and more dictatorial as to what other nations can or can not do in how they pursue a lifestyle or national identity, and or commerce.

Dear Proto,
Wonderful article and expert analysis. I could not have stated the above any better myself. Sadly some believe their views and way of life are "better" than others, when in all reality that is just a veil being woven to mask the blatant economic benefits in their own involvement.

There is a US Army base in Kosovo. The base is called Camp Bondsteel. Therefore, the US will give a blind-eye to the mischief of Hashim Thaci and his mafia goons as long as he keeps the welcome mat out for the US. It is disgusting that the US would resort to propping up thugs, murderers, and bandits to further their foreign policy agenda. Whoever said the world was fair and orderly? This guy is staunchly opposed to Serbia which is loosely aligned to Russia, and therefore an Independent Kosovo is a strategic asset to continue what appears to be a subtle but evident encirclement of Russia.

The US is making friends with Georgia, was on good terms with Ukraine before a Moscow friendly leader was elected, missile defense systems in Eastern Europe, military forces in central Asia, and other maneuvers that seem like an encirclement. As the saying goes, the Emperor has no clothes. We can complain all day about how wrong it is for our government to deal with thugs, criminals, and mass murderers, but if they are walking the line for US foreign policy objectives; then we are complaining to deaf ears. Enemy of my enemy is my friend.

This was well known many years ago......the KLA (Kosovo Liberation Army) was comprised of terrorists and Mujahadeen.

This was well known by the USA and was also the case in the Bosnian war of Mujahadeen fighters coming over to fight against Serbs and Croats.

The whole Kosovo independance situation is an embarassment on the international community and never should have been allowed to happen.

The war in the balkans isnt finished yet, it will flare up again big time and I fear the neighbouring nations will get invilved this time.

Over the last decade, criminal groups from Kosovo and neighboring Albania have reportedly set up a transnational organ-smuggling ring, either murdering victims to harvest their organs or tricking them into "donating" the body parts on false promises of payment.

You might think that Thaci would pay a political price for dabbling in the flesh trade, but in Pristina, even his political opponents have rallied to his defense, framing the allegations as an insult to Kosovo and the KLA. The head of another political party, former Prime Minister Agim Ceku, said, "Every accusation against the KLA comes from Serbia or its helpers. ... It's just an attempt to blacken our war and our victory."

At what point in time do you stop looking at history as a reasoning for certain nations objectives? 10 years, 20 years, 50 years, 300 years, 550 years?

I am sick to death of people talking about Kosovo in the context of the 90's and Milosevic. Google New York TImes/Time articles from the 80's and you will find a whole wealth of material on Albanian attacks on the Serbian minority in Kosovo. Go further another 50 years and you'll again you'll read about murders of Serbian population at the hands of the Albanians during the Italian (WW2) occupation. Go back prior to the First WW and the Balkan Wars and you will still find more material that is similiar in nature. I personally have books written in the late 19th Century which also confirm these facts.

What happened in Kosovo in the 90's is a direct consequence of Albanians complete and utter disregard to live in peace with Serbs. People tend to quote Croatia and Bosnia as rebutals, but again - the same things happened there as they happened in Kosovo. Serbs were massacred in both those countries, only 60 years ago.

Military expansion into the small country,as you say? Kosovo was a part of Serbia, therefore how can you "expand" into your own backyard? And UN had nothing to do with the war itself. It was NATO all on its own.

Needless to say, the whole pretext for war/the war itself/and post-war has been a completely and utterly biased operation against Serbs. There is no logic as to why the same people that the CIA classified as Terrorists early in the 90's, suddenly in the mid/late 90's became "oppressed freedom fighters". Unfortunately, no one cares. Western population has the attention span of goldfish and all everyone cares about is their own little worlds. The same as that never really became news, exactly the same thing will happen with Thaci being accused of being a Mafia King. Big fat nothing.

Like this is news for people from the Balkans.
We've known about this for years.
The west decided to pretend it didn't and wasn't happening. Because it wasn't convenient. They just "liberated" a bunch of people, who then turn out to be mass murdering terrorists and gangsters. Which was KNOWN from the start. But that's not what YOU were told by your media.

Half the truth was kept from you, so you would support military action against a sovereign country.
Now it's all coming out slowly, and some of you act like you give a damn.
Nobody was listening years ago when allegations of what was going on were being revealed from the Balkans.
Most people instead were like "oh, but the Serbs did this, did that".
We are talking about innocent people being kidnapped and murdered so their organs can be harvested. But that was excusable because it wasn't in the mainstream media. Now you all act like you care. Makes me sick.
