Good stuff. It's good that some people on this site are understanding what this is about and haven't given into crazy paranoia. Some people are so enthralled with this all encompassing PTB idea that they will never back anything in their entire lives. I honestly think it's an issue of their insecurity. They get riled up being paranoid, yet they have nothing to be paranoid about because they don't support anything because they believe it all to be a set up.

I have a couple points that I'd like to hear your opinion on - you say Wikileaks gives us the urge to demand truth in our social experience (both online and off), and that Wikileaks has broken the gatekeeping structure of information. I agree to both of these things, but there are two paradoxes in the way Wikileaks is operating.

1) Wikileaks is a gatekeeper - they control the flow of leaked information: what information we will see in what form, and when... Let alone creating a monopoly over internet leaks. They have backlogs of unpublished leaks. It is necessary to have a selection process of what leaks are "important" (read: will get media attention), and how they are released (read: mass redactions, meetings with MSM to establish "importance" and a timeline). This is the first paradox of Wikileaks: they break down current gatekeeping structures, but it imposes its own, infused with an agenda outside of simply "building a movement for transparency".

2) We're seeing a huge movement for the censorship of the internet and the increased protection of information. In continuing to exist, Wikileaks is pushing these agendas through much faster - and with public support. By revealing "secrets" (which aren't so damning or revolutionary in the first place), the transparency movement is helping to create a system that can keep secrets better.

So, what's the best plan of action in this situation? Even though we can feel empowered to demand transparency and openness, it looks like the Wikileaks flagship of this movement is much better able to influence policy decisions that take our freedom away. Even if we show support, does it ultimately matter?

Sidenote: I'm NOT suggesting apathy. I'm asking if there's a different way of creating transparency in our lives without having to support Wikileaks.

The question, as it would seem to me to be, is where do we go from here?

For those of us that rely on independant, or at least what we precieve to be independant, resources, the mood is rapidly changing. Changing from frustration and indignation, to anger and in many cases rage. I am not one to make statements for the sake of making statements regularly. Therefore it is odd for me to admit that it genuinely feels like the breaking point is very near.

The question we all have to ask ourselves is this:
What can I do? How can I, as an individual, concentrate my efforts for the greater cause? What is the greater cause, and what would I be willing to sacrafice for it?
And there can be no generalized answers.

I. for one, cannot believe that this revolution, which most certainly feels to be looming on the horizon, will take place peacefully. Very serious decisions must be made......

Excellent. Good video, have to say i suspect you are right. This struggle is far beyond anything to do with this one 'leak'. Its a battle to determine if the future will be free or not.

I agree about "TPTB" wanting to restrict the internet, but I don't think Wikileaks is any kind of a "catalyst".

Look at it this way - people will go 50/50 for/against Wikileaks. Consider the opinions you see on this site. Some think the guy is a hero, some think he is a spy who has gone against the government.

There is too much fractured opinion on this for it to work as a catalyst for change. There would be too much dissent as there is no uniform sentiment on the issue. Which in turn would cause too many problems. Which has indeed already happened - some want the guy freed, others have hacked sites in retaliation, others are calling for his head as a traitor.

What TPTB or "the gov" will do - should they want to further restrict the net - is they will "sell" this under the guise of protecting children. Because you'll get near 100% of the people behind *that*, or at least few who will complain if its "for the children".

I personally think the entire Wikileaks drama is staged. For what reason, I don't know. Perhaps to incite or justify some military activity.

I do not believe the farce which is WL is to restrict the net. All you'd need for that is a big batch of kiddie porn, one could even "invent" a widespread child trafficking ring - and voila! Net freedom would be GONE.
