I think that ATS should take a tougher line on those who ridicule other people's spelling.

To each their own.

I decide to go towards the higher common denominator.

Okay, but why would you equate grammar/punctuation with the "higher common denominator" . That's pure rubbish!

Listen, I was on Duke's gifted/talented list. Scored 99th percentile in mathematics and sciences each year for state examination. Ran circles around most of my teachers, ... but couldn't comprehend the bizarreness of the english language. It's so incredibly illogical, that I outright refused to learn the rules. It doesn't compute with how people use the language in the real world. It's totally outdated!

You can always educate rather than degrading the information coming into your head.

That is not in any way a judgement, nor derogatory, I was reading Tolkein at 12 years old.

I have a passion for reading and a thirst for knowledge which is unquenchable.

Okay, I was reading thick books at a young age as well. Pretty sure I've got ya stumped there, but not sure what this has to do with anything...

Then again I believe a high school education should be mandatory.

And drop-outs should lose their citizenship.

OMG!! High school is a JOKE. I'm a drop out. You'll find a fair percentage of dropouts are actually "academically gifted". It's not that we can't do the work, it's that complying with the idiocy they preach would be against our constitution. At least, this was how I felt about it.

We need higher standards and to not be one of the lowest countries as far as education is scored.

Drop the nonsense of "No Child Left Behind" and teach them correctly.

That only creates a country where the collective IQ is lower and America has enough problems.

Pay teachers more and expect more not less.

Well these last bits I will definitely agree with 100%

LOL.

Was my thread title grammatically incorrect ?

I post the same way that I talk.

I live in the British Midlands, and our dialects do not always represent the Queen's English.

I don't think I've seen a worser post on ATS, than yours.

I know of highly intelligent people that can not construct a proper sentence and can not spell correctly.

Anything they write is all spelled phoentically.

You must read it out loud for it to make sense.

I also have relatives from my marriage who speak and write English(they think) as a second language.

I have to read letters from them aloud too for them to make sense.

It does bother me about some posters spelling and word usage, because we are all trying to convey something to others.

It is imperative that sentences make sense and the proper words are used.

Actually, I comprehend this sentence structure better then I do the correct spelling and punctuation, I was once told it is because I am the reincarnation of an ancient Egyptian priestess fathered by an alien, or something like that.

It happens.

I know someone who is in university that has lived in this country far longer than I have. He has lived since around the age of two, while I repeatedly left for a few years and came back, etc. He speaks russian aswell. He can't read cyrillic, and he typs laik dis end nou, it iz not txt tawk, he reely typs laik dis finking it is normawl

Translation: "And he types like this and no, it is not 'text-speak', he really types like this thinking it is normal"

Funny thing is, i've been learning his language and can read cyrillic. Well, sometimes with a dictionary, but that is being eradicated. Spanish too, fluently.

My point being, is that some individuals just have malnourished language related areas of the brain, so they can't help it unless they dedicate themselves to "fix" it.

Word!

Seriously, I find many highly intelligent people write very funky. They just don't care. Their brains work too fast, there's too many layers of thought going on, and they gotta get it out! They gotta keep going and going and going. No time to look back. If you can't keep up or comprehend, you're not worth my time. Gotta keep producing!

I also notice I prefer shorter post that get to the point with fewer words instead of long winded responses, I tend to drift off while still reading into some sort of subconscious state of being, and have no idea what I just read, so then or than, I try reading it again and I will drift off at about he same section in the post where I difted off before,

I think this is some sort of implanted defense mechanism that keeps me from being easily led.

Sometimes I butcher a word so bad/badly, that spell check can't correct it,

A perusal of your recent posting history, displays a similar ungrammatical slant.

Got it...they took that offline quickly. I added additional stories that have now come out. This is really breaking the cable has not even been released yet. News agencies have access to the cables first before release.

Is this cable actually physically breaking ? after all, it's ''really breaking the cable''.

Or is there some breaking news < insert comma >, that you wished to relay.

Those in glasshouses...

I don't know. I think people should make an attempt to spell better and use proper grammar. There IS a spell check. It says a lot about a person you may be about to agree or argue with. Especially when they wont take the time to correct the highlighted mistakes.

I have duct tape holding the batteries in the back of my wireless keyboard. Sometimes I get a bad connection and realize that a whole word or sentence didn't show up when I typed it. To make matters worse, a few months ago I spilled a whole glass of Kombucha tea on keyboard and even though I cleaned it up the best I could, tthe kkeys sometimes stick and I get ddouble letters. Just like tthhiis. I am an educated man, but you may not judge me so, based solely on my spelling.

So I would like to add my support to the ops original post. I don't like to use Word or some other program to write my posts and then cut & paste The only time I have ever corrected someones spelling is when they made spelling mistakes in a post belittling some other poor slob.

I see both sides of the issue. I think that proper spelling and grammar should be encouraged, but at the same time, if somebody posts and has poor grammar or does not spell very well, we have no business to give them a hard time about it.

I think that spelling and grammar does lend a hand to just how serious we take other people here, but we mus make note. Not everyone here speaks English as a first language. Not everyone did as well in school as you may have.

Every now and then I see a reply to a post that says nothing more than " Your grammar is horrible. Shame on you. Blah blah blah." Well, those posts are the ones that are causing more problems then the ones who actually are on topic but still have bad grammar.

Yes. I do encourage that everyone try their best to use proper spelling and grammar, but if you see some one who spells something incorrectly or has poor grammar.... Get over it... You are not their teacher. You are not the grammar police and you are doing nothing but posting an off topic reply when you respond just saying " Hey, your grammar sucks"
