I have thought about this extensively, I'm a manchild on the internet and know lots about combat so you better not mess with me or else.

I think you were referring to a Tanto in regards to the shorter blade. Ideally though if SHTF you would grab what is ever firstly at hand e.g. Make-shift clubs (Legs off a chair, Sticks, Bats, etc), anything with a blade (Knives, Scissors, Razors, etc). As for everyone mentioning ranged weapons, yes anyone who has access or thinks they can get access to guns. Will go for them. An to everyone talking about Crossbows? You can have them. I'll stick with my 60 pound Compound Bow. Don't know why you'd want to use a Crossbow, if your expecting to have to fight against other people.

In your fantasy world here there would be NO MORE "city folk". They would be destroyed.

You guys kill me......figuratively

Why do you presume to know my "fantasy" world? I bet you presume a lot. That can get you killed real quick, literally.

Life as we comfortably know it can stop on a dime, leaving us with the choices made beforehand to either survive or die, protect our loved ones or see them hurt or killed.

I've been through several natural disasters, three in one year, in 2004. It wasn't the cops or the national guard that kept the looters and crooks at arms length, it was an armed citizenry standing at every intersection guarding each other's lives and property. The national guard had to cut its way into our rural community through downed trees and powerlines, so we were on our own for a couple of days.

If you don't think that can happen to YOU, then keep on living in your own fantasy world.

Your on the money. I've come to the conclusion that everyone of the posters here talking about all their weapons and what they would do are really cowards. IF they REALLY wanted to learn about these weapons and be prepared for something they would join the military.

However I think most are too young to even join the military and just like to play army.

There you go again, shooting off your mouth when you don't know a thing. Maybe you should put the safety on that cakehole and holster it.

I've found a majority of posters I correspond with to have military backgrounds just like me, and a lot of those who don't just have good common sense, unlike some posters on here.

The SHTF means that the excriment has hit the fan. Also, I for one only plan to use any weapon as a last resort. Also you need to practice, the weapons you carry (this includes guns) need to be practiced with if you want skill with them. And to everyone who feels tht something will or will not happen for sure, don't use absolutes, because people can't see the future and won't know what the future holds. And amc621 if you don't like the thread bugger off no need to be an ass. Also, we aren't discussing why there will be no ammo, just what you would use if that was the case. And to oaf 21 people aren't nice and while joe shmoe off the street might not attack me, there will be people who will raid for things that other people have.

Exactly! We're talking scenarios here. Given enough time the ammo WILL run out, and I don't care if you're the best shot since Wild Bill Hickock's Wild West Show.

Homemade black powder and muzzle loaders aside, you need a back up plan.

With my katana, I can kill anyone with a knife or a stick. With my compound bow, I can hunt efficiently and silently, man or beast as the need arises, at a distance.

amc621 don't presume you automatically know everything about everyone on here, because you don't.

Well, it really wouldn't surprise me if they reacted completely differently in one of those situations. Not sure I see them as cowards, though. I do however see them as completely full of themselves because they're under the impression that everyone wants what they have and they have to defend it at all costs. News flash... I'm not going to break in and take what you have... because I respect you, regardless if my life is on the line.

It saddens me, because they've all bought the propaganda, hook line and sinker, that everyone's out to get them! Divide and conquer at its best.

I believe you Oaf, and upon encountering a gentleman such as yourself I'd do everything in my power to aid you, which I think most people on here would.

I just want to be able to guarantee that the people I love will be safe from people who lack your moral strengths.

Is that ok with you?

RPC. Rocket Propelled Chainsaw. It's really heavy and reloading takes a while but for sheer awesomeness you can't match it. Give me a Kukri and I'll be fine.

I would use my surgically implanted balls of steel inside my detachable ballsack. I would quickly tie the prosthetic ballsack to a string and knock you out cold like David did to Goliath. I can't wait to travel. I want the TSA to give me a freedom fondle and feel my balls of steel. They need to be reminded of the time America had balls of steel.

Balls.

Machete - For obvious reasons, this is very user friendly.

Katana - Used in open confrontation with alot of space, not for indoors. Is not fragile if hit directly against the blade when using a proper sword, katanas are vulnerable to bending from the side however and this can be caused by incorrect cuts. This means not slicing straight on but slicing at an angle due to inexperience.

Wakizashi - Samurai short sword, halfway between a tanto (knife) and a katana, this weapon is used for indoor fighting. Incredibly light and quick and capable of causing massive damage. This is my weapon of choice due to a combination of balance, speed and strength. Interesting factoid is that these are considered more dangerous than katanas by people who know what they're doing!

Khukri - Famed weapon of the Ghurkas, these are similar to a machete but are oriented with their weight forward which causes more destructive blows aimed to stop an opponent. The K-bar version someone posted before is great as it is water resistant and camouflage coated.

Bokken - Wooden samurai sword, made out of extremely hard wood these things are essentially a well balanced extremely hard stick. They can break bones pretty easily and were considered dangerous in feudal japan in practice as a sword would make a clean cut, whereas a bokken could cause internal bleeding and wipe you out. Props to the most well balanced stick!

Throwing weapons - For distraction of the target, a badly aimed knife stuck slightly in someones leg will give them something to think about when you start hacking with a machete. Plus if your throwing weapon is a knife you can stab people who run at you.

Sykes & Fairbairn knife - A highly specialised weapon, it is only made as a stabbing knife and not really for slashing, probably the best fighting knife in the world. You can throw this knife but be aware the handle is weighted and will result in your opponent taking a handle in the face, which can stun an opponent if you feel particularly tricky. Massive penetration with this weapon.

Spear - Don't throw it for the love of god. Use basic techniques and this weapon shines through, no Jet Li spinning kung fu nonsense. Master basic two handed blocks in each direction for dealing with machete wielders who pass the pointy end of the stick. For offence grab it with both hands and repeatedly thrust hard, fast and often in your attackers direction, aim for the body. Pretty easy win. In this instance a Yari is preferable to something like a naginata, naginatas have a curved blade and while beautiful and deadly, they take time to master. A yari is essentially a long stick with a straight blade at the end, no curvature and therefore easy for beginners to cause damage with.

As you can tell, I love a good blade

i think wakizashi is what you were looking for. and Tantos, which are even smaller.

Personally, i think ranged weapons like crossbows and bows would be your best bet for practical purposes like hunting/fishing as well as defense. couple that with some throwing knives and maybe a longsword for reach and I'd be comfy. and I know you said melee weapons but I sure as hell would have at least 1 pistol and a few mags at all times just to feel safe. I mean, just opt for the bow versus the deer and save the .45 rounds for the crazy a$$hole attacking you for supplies.

On another not i remember reading somewhere that a machete would be optimal for a 'zombie apocalypse' scenario (with a bicycle as the best vehicle)

Except that I am a GIRL...(gasp).... and a country girl at that. But I guaran-dang-tee you that I CAN use all the weapons I own.

I see that a lot of folks on here seem to be too "civilised" to fight to protect what they love. That's a shame. The only time I intend to fight is if someone wants to take what I have by force. My whole family is willing to share food and lodging, as long as one is willing to work to help out. I don't anticipate hunkering down in a sweaty hole waiting to put a sniper bullet thru the cranium of every joeblow that wanders near to my house!

That being said, I have weapons and the training to use them. I also possess the sack (figuratively) it takes to know when they are necessary. I suggest a few of grow some real quick-like!

Well thanks! I appreciate that, my friend! =)

It's honestly refreshing to hear that, despite differing opinions on the subject.

This just proves my point... whether you have your weapons of choice or not, we CAN all get along... which is why I'm really not worried about the feces hitting the fan.

Doesn't happen often, but humanity can be pretty amazing at times.
