I doubt there is a smoking gun file at all. Why would Assange even think about holding back "better" files than he has already released? Wouldn't he release the juiciest ones first?

That's true, but also consider the fact that he might have been planning for his arrest since he released the Afghanistan cables in July. He could have saved the best files for this little "insurance file" in case something like this ever happened.

And you also have to consider, if the government really doesn't care about what's inside that file, why wouldn't this guy be six feet under right now? Several politicians have considered putting him on the kill list, and G. Gordon Libby, one of the Nixon crooks HIMSELF, has tried to say he should be executed without trial. If they don't care that the file is released, my money goes to the fact that this guy would be dead.

Are there any linux users on here who can shed some light on what kind of files these are?

.gz files

I have managed to view the contents within the insurance.aes and i will be attempting to extract the which i don't think i will be able to do. If someone who understands linux and identify which program i can use to extract these types of files.

Thanks

If you viewed anything you either have the key (sorry but you don't) or it was encrypted nonsense, useless to anyone.

Rumor has it; the magic key is:

"ACollectionOfDiplomaticHistorySince_1966_ToThe_Pr esentDay#" (minus quotes)
