Developing story... Report that the Iraqi official heading the investigation into the alleged corruption in the United Nations oil-for-food program was killed in a bomb attack earlier this week. Could someone have gotten a little too close to the truth in this alleged corruption?

Iraqi Official Heading Oil-For-Food Probe Killed

July 3, 2004 — BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The Iraqi official heading the investigation into alleged corruption in the United Nations oil-for-food program was killed in a bomb attack earlier this week, officials familiar with the probe said on Saturday.

Ihsan Karim, head of the Board of Supreme Audit, died in hospital after a bomb placed under one of the cars in his convoy exploded on Thursday, the officials said.

There is now much more available in the above original source link.

This investigation has brought to the surface many allegations of corruption within the U.N. oil-for-food program.. It would seem very ironic that the Iraqi official heading the investigation into the alleged corruption would die in an attack where a bomb was placed under his vehicle.

I find it very unusual that this Iraqi Official was attacked on Thursday yet it is just now breaking news?

From the ABCNEWS.com report:

"The assassination of Mr Karim is very worrying. Bremer appointed the audit board and left them on their own," Sethna told Reuters.

"The investigation was the highest profile probe the board was handling. It is impossible to speculate who killed Mr Karim, but the oil-for-food corruption involved very powerful people inside and outside Iraq," he added.

Only time will tell what impact this will have on this investigation. There were alleged kick back payments and BILLIONS of dollars involved and many nations alleged to be involved.

Placed under his car?! That means that either some one who officially had access to his car placed it there or somehow some one related to the insurgency placed it there (I am not sure why they would target him in the first place anyway, unless he was collateral in an attack against a different target). Now, is it just me, or does the idea of an insurgent sneaking into where ever it is they keep the official cars, and putting a bomb under it in the dead of night just seem kind of unlikely? This seems very suspicious to me...
