Though not an unique event (tornados and waterspouts have been known to happen in Portugal - 42 on record between 1936 and 2004, the most destructive having taken place in November of 1954 and having claimed 5 lives and injured 220) it is definitely rare enough a weather phenomenon to catch everyone by surprise.

This recent tornado as of now is known to have hit a kindergarten resulting in 18 wounded children (I believe the video above by shr4n is footage of said kindergarten).

I heard this morning on the radio that there are some 200 houses with damaged roofs.

A friend of my sister lives in Tomar (he works on the Convent of the Order of Christ, a convent built by the Knights Templar), and he said that the tornado moved against the convent walls, made some damages but was deflect by convent, and moved a little to the north until it disappeared.

Besides Tomar, there were also smaller tornadoes on two other locations, with some damages.
