Retailers selling sexualised products aimed at children could face new restrictions under plans being considered by the government.

An inquiry to explore whether rules should prevent the marketing of items such as "Porn star" T-shirts or padded bras to children has been set up.

A code of conduct on "age appropriate" marketing and a new watchdog are among plans being considered by the review.

Children's Minister Sarah Teather said parents faced a tidal wave of pressure.

At least they are trying to do something right. The children have been targeted for far too long. Be it on tv, magazines, in music and clothing it seems that at every turn they are being bombarded with sex.
Its about time we stop letting the cooperation's educate our children and giving them these false idols.
What kind of parent would let their child wear a top saying porn star?? What hope has the child got?? Hopefully she will be able to break out of the mould. Reminds me of those parents that put their little girls in a Beauty pageant in the USA all dolled up,it is just not right.

Disney and other such cooperation's have a lot to answer for as well. As well as all these pop stars and music videos with their innuendos and scantily clad women.(not that I disagree on that but I am a grown man and will not be trying to copy the dance moves)
Children grow up so fast these days as it is ,lets try and preserve that little bit of innocence they have left. What are your views??

As the father of a 12 and 13 year old daugher, i applaud this move.

TV has a lot to do with this, and don't even get me started on the so called innocence of the Disney Channel programmes they show. Basicaly they send out the message that unless you are the most popular, well dressed and often skimpiest dressed at school, you don't count in this world. Oh yeah, you HAVE to be a pop star or actor to get anywhere in this world apparently....great role models

Padded bras to give tiny kids boobs? No need.

Skirts up to their backsides whist still at primary school. No need.

Yet the stores will continue to sell them until someone does something like this. I would love to see the background checks on the designers that make these items.

So bring it on i say.

It really is sick. I remember having teen pop stars when I was a kid. Like Tiffany, Debbie Gibson.....I dont remember them dressing in almost nothing...

Although, I could be wrong.


On the other hand, however...times have changed alot since the eighties. Maybe the values that my generation, or the one before it, are actually a bit prudish?

they will only use this for MORE power. it ALWAYS starts off for some seemingly just cause, they neglect to tell you that they reserve the right to adjust the law accordingly after it passes.

tomorrow it will be 17 year olds with freedom shirts, american flags, or whatever other expression they dont like.


i could also see this turning into another way for CPS to take children from their parents.imagine if a kid had an oathkeepers shirt on, they would surely label it "terrorist affiliated". i know of 2 people that have already had their children taken from them for being affiliated with oathkeepers (they called it a militia).

this effectively gives the children AND parents less rights. and could possibly make activist-type expression only legal for adults. you and i both know teenagers start thinking like activists much younger than 18....this seems to me designed to cause problems.

dont be fools. if you dont like children wearing "porn star" shirts (ive never seen one) then go up to the parents and tell them off yourself. dont cry to the government.

I see this absolutely everywhere and its sickening, and still being at school i see its effects first hand.
I pity the girls who feel like they need to pull up their skirts and pull down their tops for male attention and affection.
Its really not their fault, the amount of things you see every day regarding sex is ridiculous. Songs are a great example. I swear its on purpose, the new singer is cool and slightly innocent when they first come out. They lure the kids in and they become mad sex symbols.
Lady Gaga and Katy Perry are pretty good examples.
How many times on TV shows aimed at teenagers do we see the 'pretty girls' (overly sexulised) getting all the attention?
Not to mention the amounts of hormones pumped into food that actually promote breast growth.

but back on topic. This is probably the best plan they have come up with regarding the younger generations yet. I just hope they dont end up making things worse. (example; alcopops tax in Australia. Just made all us teenagers drink straight stuff. There would have been soo many more alcohol posining incidents at that time)

Thanks for your comment, You do make a good point and was something I had considered, but you have got to admit that Children are being bombarded with sexual themes all the time and something needs to be altered.I do not think it will go as far as you make out, teenagers will do what they want to do regardless. My concern is for the younger children who are so easily influenced.

No. They will continue to sell them until people stop buying them. No store is going to stock items that no one buys.

We don't need more legislation, more rules, more paper pushers telling us what to buy, where to buy, how to buy.

If you're a parent, PARENT. Stop expecting someone else to do your job for you.

No offense but I can't believe that a policy is being supported like this. It is up to the parents to not buy those products, not let their kid wear those products and to instill the fear of god in their child if they don't follow rules that you have set for them. Which brings me to what the real problem is. It's not the corporations, they will just push out product based on demand. It is the parents of said kids buying this stuff. The parents need to take some ACTUAL responsibility in raising their offspring. Instead they drop them off at daycare, then school, then after school sports, then plop them in front of the TV for hours until it's "bedtime" where the kid probably has a tv in his or her own room. They are being bombarded with sexual and violent content because parents don't step in and say 1 hour of tv or video games then you have to READ A BOOK or find something else to do. I could keep going but honestly I'm just sick and tired of parents blaming everyone else except themselves, when it's obvious to ANYONE that has had a decent upbringing, that the parents aren't doing squat to help themselves.

I agree with you that the parents need to take affirmative action and should be held to account.Unfortunately some parents either do not care or fail to realise what they are doing to their children. For this reason media attention like this is a good thing and may make them think again about what is best for their child.
Also be in no doubt that sex appears in cartoons as subliminal messages and is ever prevalent in both lyrics of pop songs and the video its self. They target younger markets knowingly and then the cooperation's then take advantage further.

"Porn Star" t shirts FOR KIDS??? Seriously??? I can understand making them in a small size, but do they actually put these in the childrens' clothing section?? If there is a conspiracy to help keep kids from being exploited, I'm all for that one. Go NWO!

The innocent theme turned bad does seem to be a recurring theme for the "idols" churned out of Disney. There is Brittany, Cristina, Miley Cyrus (dancing on a pole) to name just a few. This is most defiantly done on purpose. Check out this youtube link www.youtube.com...

I see the only way for this situation to be made right is either education for the parents or an overhaul of society as a whole. Was looking through a catalogue earlier, Argos to be exact and they have playboy things for kids.

Freedom is not absolutr.
It is not always about giving up the power... and it will lead to more. It is plain and simple morals. We have those no matter what lifestyle or religion.
Lets say in perfect freedom capitalist land you decide to short selling dildos for tweenies (10 to 12) and you market as tweeny peeny and you have tween celbs holding one up to their mouth on the cover of the box. Maybe a gay line for those tweeny boys that don't "get into sports".
Sure its freedom for everyone and capitalism will dictate...demand and supply... give me a break. We need a moral compass.

Another member here talked about being a kid int he 80;s, as i was. i rememebr debbie gibson, electric youth! i liked the song that wa swhat early 1989? i was 14 then. And back then i thought that seemed jsut a tad sexually explicit! and i had jsut started getting into heavy metal, whereing slayer shirts, metallica shirts, which themselves, were kinda graphic but never anything sexual. Canibal corpse, was always very explicit. but thats music, not sex. sex or sexual is freedom to do give in that area..promoting it, as with these t shirts feels like its a violation of ones self inner self and freedom, kinda like being raped*
i should feel pitty for the aprents whove actually bought this for thier kids, but that in itself, is their responsablity too. remember when the got milk adds were popular? hto chick with white milk on her lips? that was very suggesstive, and i would ask my friends what are they doing? its kinky but in reality offensive, on a social level. i eman sex is something most do in their privacy of place, not out in public. seems like certain corporations or industrys are prmoting the opposite of that.
