(S) On March 27, Yemeni military officers discovered an unmanned USG reconnaissance aircraft (Scan Eagle) that had washed ashore on the Arabian Sea coast in the province of Hadramaut. The President's Office immediately protested the incident to CDA and requested an explanation.

¶2. (S) On March 28, CDA spoke with President Saleh (who was attending the Arab League summit in Riyadh) via telephone and confirmed that the aircraft belonged to the U.S. Navy. He assured Saleh that the plane crashed performing routine reconnaissance near the ship and had not been operating in Yemeni territory.

On March 29, official and pro-government media sources reported that the Yemeni military had shot down an Iranian "spy plane" off the coast of Hadramaut, after communicating with "multinational forces" in the region.

(S) Comment: President Saleh clearly believes the unmanned aircraft had been performing reconnaissance in Yemeni territory when it crashed. He could have taken the opportunity to score political points by appearing tough in public against the United States, but chose instead to blame Iran. No doubt focused on the unrest in Saada and our support for the transfer of excess armored personnel carriers from neighboring countries (reftel), Saleh decided he would benefit more from painting Iran as the bad guy in this case. End Comment.

Interesting. The CIA/US Navy was flying Predators over Afghanistan in the mid to late-90's monitoring al Qaeda. I wonder what they're watching in Yemen. Osama and his pals aren't welcome in Yemen, well, at least they weren't in 2000. S+F, this isn't news now, but it will be part of something bigger in the future, guaranteed.

If true, the blatant attempt to "whitewash" this and flip it to push an agenda makes me question the true intent of the operation.

Seeing how some minute segments have recieved this if true this will not be heard from anymore as they got caught red handed trying to lie and need an easy out to cover their tails.

The fact that Yemen Pres. Ali Abdullah Saleh is saying that it's a US Navy ship with no response from The Pentagon or The Joint Cheifs tells me that this claim is true.

Yet again those sick, twisted and demonic fools who are literately foaming at the mouth in ecstacy wanting war with Iran yet again used yet another reason to peddle a war that no one clearly wants as the term is as long as they don't launch anything against anyone that they are good if they do they will get wiped clean off the map ending the problem once and for all.

If you have been following wikileaks, there have been cables released that reveal that U.S. air strikes are taking place in Yemen. Yemeni officials have been helping to hide them by claiming the strikes as their own. This drone was most likely watching potential targets for future strikes and this is probably a continuation of the shell game used to hide/deny U.S. involvement.

Washington and Riyadh both have the consent of Sana'a to engage any hostile emeny so this attempt to try and say that this is somehow happing "behind the scenes" is wrong. As The Pentagon, The White House and The US Federal Govt along with The House Of Saud in Saudi Arabia and the entire Saudi Arabian Government is in full cooperation and in constant communication with the Yemeni Government and The Yemeni Military in cordination, execution and operational authourity that is needed under explicit and direct guidelines that before either engage they are orders to inform the Yemeni Military beforehand to make them aware of any operation that is being conducted within its own borders by any foriegn military, BTW, India, Pakistan, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Oman are also watching the situation very carefully as it unfolds and develops.
