well I dig Lennon too... what really sucks was learning just how wrong he was when I grew up.

"imagine" that is very similar to "nothing"

ok, the most condensed argument possible

If there is a God, he did such a damn good job in everything that its impossible to see his actual work in anything. Every evidence ever uncovered matches perfectly a incredibly slow progression from mud to blood.
So...Since the world, and universe, is designed as such...if there is a God, clearly he wants us to believe in evolution..else why would he set up such a convincing model

God gave you a brain if you believe in God..therefore, he clearly wanted you to use it and uncover the truth (at least as far as he designed it to look). The simple non-brain answer is creationism...you have to use the gift of intelligence to understand evolution.

So...one could say, athiesm may indeed be the true intended belief system of a deity

Yes...this post is all philosophy, but some simply don't "get" hard science.

He wasn't wrong
just early...perhaps born 100 years before his time.

then what then would it all mean if there was nothing to live or die for ? maybe he didn't even realize what he was saying they were quite wasted I might add... Take a look at Yoko in that video damn ! she like a mindless automaton, hardly even a spark of life there.

The Church of Satan dates to the 1960s. The text it is primarily based on is Crowley's Book of the Law which was published in 1904. Arguably the information contained in The Book of the Law goes back thousands of years. The fact is theistic Satanists, those who actually worship Lucifer, are in an extreme minority when it comes to Satanists. In fact most theistic Satanists do not like being referred to as Satanists due to the connection with LaVey's Church of Satan.

I could be wrong, but doesn't luciferianism have its roots in cults of Dionysis?
I may have to reread my ancient mythos
all this current mythos has been my focus for the last decade or so..but I am remembering something along the lines of the dionysis cult merged with some offshoot of druidism, then got transformed again when christianity spread to the latest hotness.

Your post is a perfect example of how belief in a god and the the belief in evolution could co-exist, within someones personal belief structure.

It's odd to me that for some this is almost as bad. Eg: Fundamental Creationists. Or people who take the bible, 100% literally.

If there is nothing to die for, then you have to figure out what there is to live for.
Some would call this love and enlightenment...as per the videos symbolism

Judging other peoples affections based on how they "look" is not something I engage in..far too judgemental for my taste. From what I understand, they loved each other.

that is still not really what I was looking for but you prove the point, Evolution does NOT replace Creation... Creation is the overall encompassing philosophy, no matter which way you go if you want to keep searching even using science as a tool you will always come back to this.

I quite like the simple answer.

Some have argued that this song was about the idealsIdea of Socialism. Some have argued even communism.
However those arguments are philosophical, best left for another thread.

I think the most important part of the song that is applicable to this thread is:
Imagine there's no Heaven, It's easy if you try.

The statement, meaning that their is an overwhelming amount of evidence that "Religion" (mostly all religions)are usually detrimental to the furthering of society.
One could even argue there is significance in the fact that it is the first lines of the song.
Ah philio sophia.

wow are you sure you are not a Christian or a believer of something or other ? this sounds exactly like Christianity...

let's philosophize on morality for a few, and where these belief structures came from and who first started to write them down.

I personally feel this whole thread is a hoax now because it would seem that people are just trying to be "cool" or something denouncing faith or Jesus or Buddha you name your pick.

these moral philosophies have been discussed and talked about long before 1854 !

that's really Cool ! you guys must be tough

Morality, by no means, is original to Christianity.

In fact, Morality is a founding tenet in Buddhism. Be good to others and good is returned. This is a simplification of Karma. However I digress, to stay on topic, your request is better reserved for a separate thread.

Technically an atheist can be a Buddhist. Traditionally, Buddhism is a philosophic school of thought not a religion. So, a person could follow Buddha's teachings while not believing in any deities.

If that is your opinion you misinterpret the original purpose of this thread. Which is hypothesizing why Creationists(look the term up) refute the piles of evidence that support Evolution.
Do they do so because of Insanity or Willful Ignorance?

For you to say that religious people held Universal Knowledge back to control people is absurd

Look at the crusades, the inquisitions, the witch-hunts, the protests whenever any holy book was translated into a more widely accessible tongue, the indulgences, and perhaps most recently suicide bombings for example. Do you honestly believe that, in a religion that started out preaching non-violence to monotheistic religions, blowing yourself up on a train carriage full of people (statistically speaking, most of them Christians) represents being given the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth?
edit on 9/12/2010 by TheWill because: (no reason given)

How exactly do CORRUPTED religions and CORRUPTED religious leaders prove religion is "bad"? Since politics and politicians are also VERY CORRUPT does that mean we don't need them or does it mean we NEED TO CHANGE them for the better?

THAT ARGUEMENT was used by communists to keep people disconnected from their creator and thus easily manipulate their subjects, in many cases without the people realising it till it was too late! Only a misdirected atheist(and all atheists are misdirected to a large degree) could kill millions of people in the name of "freedom" from oppression.

Corrupt institutions do NOT nullify their existance nor do they nullify their original purpose. If the UN is corrupt does that mean it was intended to be that way OR does it mean it got corrupted along the way due to human imperfection; primarily greed from the rulling class and massive ignorance from the masses?

Science, religion and government have ALL been corrupted but it takes knowledgable folks to understand why and how. As a true socialist(not the marxist version) I praise liberals for their ideals but they are dead wrong when it comes to religion.

I agree to an extent with your statements , any body of power can be corrupted, or led astray.

But that was not the purpose of The Wills' post.

His post was to give example to where religions kept people ignorantsuppressed innovation to make it easier to control people.

He uses this example because apparently Oozyism believes otherwise.

You attack his argument without the context in which he made his argument.
edit on 9-12-2010 by TruthAboveIgnorance because: it was not correct to say withheld knowlege, he used the term 'kept people ignorant'

Please note, the original context (a long, long, long, long way back) of that statement was that people use ignorance to control people, and religion has been used as a tool to create that ignorance (e.g. God will be angry with you if you doubt his word, God works in mysterious ways, cries of Blasphemy etc, etc, etc.). I was not saying that it was the only doctrine that had been used to control people or to keep people ignorant, and I was not saying that religion came about to keep people ignorant, or even that power was/is its only purpose.

Sorry for any confusion, and please don't go down Oozyism's path of demanding to know when ignorance has led to people being easier to control... after all, this is being posted on a forum with the motto "deny ignorance", so isn't that sort of the point?

I should really think about having a disclaimer attached to everything I say.

EDIT: So, someone already said this for me. Thanks to them and apologies to EarthCitizen for the redundant reply.

they do so to get the kafir's mind flowing maybe just to stir the pot you know and I suspect they would have never done so if unenlightened people were not trying to establish atheism in the first place... It is easy to understand now why I get along with muslim people here in my country but Britain is having serious problems... it's plain to see why Islam looks down on ignorance too.
