Arsenic-feeding bacteria expands traditional notions of life

www.cnn.com

Washington (CNN) -- Scientists have discovered a form of bacteria that can thrive largely on arsenic -- an element generally considered toxic -- dramatically expanding both traditional notions of how life is sustained and the range of where it might be found in the universe, NASA funded-researchers announced Thursday.

This is the major astrobiological announcement from NASA that has been capturing headlines and imaginations. Nothing shocking but very interesting nonetheless. This is the first time that an organism has been discovered that can thrive on arsenic. If this is possible, the possibilities for life to thrive on other elements and molecules is wide open.

I like to think they are slowly prepping the masses for full disclosure with little bits like this.

If I am not mistaken, there are organisms on Earth that life off of arsenic. This finding opens many doors for future research and hopefully things will start to get real interesting.

More boring microbe crap , NASA did the same thing during the Clinton Administration when they found the meteorite from Mars with the alien microbes embedded in it, same old stuff nothing new. When is NASA going to realize that over half of the people in the world know that we are not alone in the universe. Why don't they just tell us the truth, what they really know , I'm getting tired of their games.

My bad, didn't see that one.

And the other one used Fox's catchy headline!

This thread is dead.

Contrary to popular belief, science isn't all about the novelty factor. "Walking, talking, telepathic aliens" that we need "disclosure" for... well, putting aside whether they exist (and the more important factor, would they know about/visit us if they did), this is huge.

Up until now, NASA has only considered the possibility of biological life that requires the common nutrients found on Earth: liquid water, oxygen, carbon, phosphorus, hydrogen, etc. They're starting to realize that this concept is silly, and there are more possibilities for life that just the way it happened on Earth.

Heck, if there was an advanced civilization like ours somewhere far away, perhaps they created multiplying, evolving robots.
