China with time would find other markets for its goods and not mainly US. Trade with EU is booming, infact trade with every country is booming. Taiwan imports 11% of its GDP worth of goods from China, Korea 8%, Japan 5%...... America is estimated to have 2 trillion more GDP because of cheap foreign labour (cough cough, mainy CHina).

Currently China and US is bonded economically, you like your cheap labour, we like our foreign investments. It would take a war to break that bond. So if WWIII comes then only one of us would be left standing if political trends continue into the future with China and America having polar differences in ideals and wishes.

Chinas growth is externally dependant - undermine the global, US lead, openess of trade and globalisabtion will destroy china.

China's current and future position is primarly dependent on the United States. To think China will somehow fare batter from a world war is mere fabrication - the US/western world is the strongest economy in the world and the most likely to recover from economic shocks.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. No doubt that US would remain as #1 for a while but with what I see on CNN, its not so pretty.

China is not as externally dependant as you think, China can and will and have supported itself, we compared to America is much more self dependant. The pure existence of US is based on the suffering and misery of others and their environment.

All things are variables with the respect of time. US would not remain as the lead dog forever, China wouldn't be the challenger forever either, in fact, India or someother country would be more powerful than US someday but that is someday. We can't make analysis so fast, China has a state controled media (similar to America but America just calls it capitalism as a whole), anything known to us could be false and misguiding.

I state again, we shouldn't fortell the future because everything changes.

Who the hell watches CNN

I actually like CNN, its pretty similar to CCTV in China, so confusing and misguiding with tons of propaganda (America calls it personal opinions). FOX news is like that too. Its funny to hear all the things they say where they just speak what you want to listen to. Trying to interpret the facts from the false info is what I like about it, practice your mind just by sitting in front of a TV.

I prefer to tend away from facts - they are given - i look at peoples responses.

Its interesting how people respond to facts and its important to acknowledge the multitude of responses that people can rationally respond to given such "factual" information. Be it correct, incorrect, be it a political or moral decision - all responses are rational and consistent with individual utility and desires.

Everything is opinion and everyone has their own angle.

In my view, anything associated with opinion is propaganda.

Ameirca exists the way it is because of its entepreneurial spirit and ingenuity. It does not "live off the sufferings" of anyone. This is not a socialist world.

You might be really surprised at how wrong you are broadsword, America is currently the top of the food chain, anything below goes in and comes out as doodoo. Canada is basically screwed because of NAFTA and the new friendship agreement we signed a few weeks ago giving America even more authority in every aspect of Canadian politics and culture.

I advise anyone who thinks that America doesn't live on the suffering of the poor to watch a movie called "The Corporation".

I fail to see cowlan, why your statement singles out America, every country has a tiered society with the poor being on the bottom.

As Broadsword said, America is a thte top because of its ingenuity and entrepreneurial spirit.

You can hardly call Canada a beacon of light

why....beacause many people here are ignorant, they read a headline and think they know it all. Quite frankly, most people here really have no idea about the real world or how it works. The bigger this site gets the more morons it attracts.

China is afraid of the freedom that Taiwan represents:

The head of Taiwan's opposition People First Party, James Soong, has met Chinese President and Communist Party leader Hu Jintao in Beijing.

Mr Lien was the first Nationalist head to visit China since the party fled to Taiwan after losing the 1949 civil war.

Taiwan's President Chen Shui-bian has given both Mr Lien and Mr Soong's trip his blessing.

Beijing refuses to talk to Mr Chen until he accepts its one-China policy - acknowledging Taiwan is part of China.

An earlier agreement - known as the 1992 consensus - was a way of fudging the thorny issue of whether Taiwan was part of China, and allowed the two sides to negotiate.

...Taiwanese President Chen now denies that there ever was a consensus.

All eyes will be on Taiwan's constitutional elections on Saturday, to gauge how China's charm offensive is playing with the island's voters...

During Mr Lien's meeting with Mr Hu earlier this month, the two men agreed to reduce tensions. The Nationalist leader was given a warm reception in China, and he made a series of conciliatory speeches that pleased Beijing.

"The fundamental path towards solving the cross-straits problem is not shouting slogans and it is not weapons," Mr Soong said in a speech at Beijing's Tsinghua University on Wednesday.

"The two sides must make the people's well-being number one, and only then can they seek an implementable plan that is acceptable to both sides," he said.

Hopefully Soong's diplomacy skills can pave the way for a formal Hu Jintao-Chen Shui-bian meeting that can secure a lasting peace for the region.
These negotiations definitely seem promising.

The current government of Taiwan denies the 1992 concensus exists.

If the concensus mean acceptance of "one china" as a starting block, the negotiations with the legitamate government of Taiwan will fall to nothing.

Lien and Soong are not able to negotiate for the people of Taiwan.

Lien and Soong represent failed politicians going to China to get the status the Taiwan people would not give them at home. Possbly to fill their pockets with gold. Possibly to be first in line to hand over Taiwan, if they get the chance.

I was wondering if anybody was going to pick up on that. I posted a ATSNN article about Taiwan rejecting the "One China, two faces" or whatever they proposed. Rember the catchy Hong Kong slogan "One China two systems"???

THis is a classic propaganda ploy. Meet with a minority opposition group and make grand statements. It puts the ruling party on the defensive and in a position to have to react to seemingly inoculous statements.
