China to censor text messages

Topic started on 2-7-2004 @ 03:58 AM by BOHICA

China is expanding its censorship controls to cover text messages sent using mobile phones.

New regulations have been issued to allow mobile phone service providers to police and filter messages for pornographic or fraudulent content.

news.bbc.co.uk...

The real purpose of the censorship is to control political dissention. The Chinese government is determined to not allow "false political rumors" from being spread. Yeah, rumors like freedom of the press, religion, and speech.

And to think there are some people in the United States, and entire governments (such as that of the French Republic) who want to be buddy buddy with these guys.

You know America may have a limited sort of freedom, but these citizens seem to have little to no freedom at all. I can't even imagine having to be censored like that and my heart goes out to them.

For those of you that are old enough to remember the Tiananmen Square massacre, you know just what I am talking about. I really don't consider many people heroes, but this man is at the top of my list.

We're halfway there in the UK. Text messages are all scanned for security threats. A man was arrested and released last month here because he had some keywords in a text message that they (presumably the Echelon station here) caught.

I remember Tiananmen Square, I saw that event happen at the time. I was sure they were going to rumble over him.

Are you refering to the one where some guy sent his friend lyrics to a Clash song and was taken into custidy because the word terrorist kept appearing in the song? That was just ridiculous! I understand for a country to protect its people, but you're never going to see the sun if you are hidding in a safe closet.

Yup, that's the guy. It shocked a lot of people to have verification that all our text messages are read. I've been sure of it for years, it's been mentioned by the govt before, and documentaries on the UK TV have investigated it.
