WH Official: Obama to Freeze Pay for Fed Workers

A White House official says President Barack Obama will announce a pay freeze for federal employees Monday. The official wouldn't say how long the freeze would be in place.The chairman of Obama's bipartisan deficit commission has proposed a three-year freeze in pay for most federal employees. The commission's report is due to be released later this week.

Welcome to the real world government workers. Pay freezes have been going on in the private sector for the past several years and even SS has had their COLA increases impacted. I think the next items on the cutting board should be benefits for life and wasteful social programs. I think changes have to happen to social security. It's a glorified ponzi scheme and unsustainable. How long does it take the average recipient to recoup every dollar they've put into it....maybe 4 years at best? I think I saw at stat somewhere that at some point there would be multiple retirees per working person!

Strap in everyone.... If this comes to fruition.... Holy Hell is going to break loose within our government.

Between, Wikileaks, the encroaching front of war in the Koreas, and our governments financial status.... We're in for some serious poo, if you get what i'm saying.

Very interesting time to be alive in the world.... Are we witnessing the fall of Rome? I would say yes. Nothing happens over night, but this has not happened over night. There has been a build up to this point for several years now, the board has been set and the pieces are in place. The coming checkmate of the USA is becoming a painful reality for those of us that live here.

The US is standing on the brink of collapse, our government has been aware of this moment for quite some time now.

How is this going to effect the common man and his family? Well, look at how these money games have already effected the working class.... We're jobless, we're income-less, unless your lucky enough to be receiving an unemployment check, we have no representation in the government, and soon we will be expected to willingly work as indentured servants to the government, THANKS TO the executive, and legislative branches of our own government. You think, Geitner, or Pelosi, or any of the snakes are worried about how this is going to hurt us? If you do, you are living with delusional thoughts from fantasy land. THEY ARE BREAKING THE SYSTEM TO THEIR GAIN ONLY, NOT OURS. THEY BENEFIT, WE DON'T.

Are you going to work your whole life to pay for the extreme folly of the government???? IS THIS THE CHANGE YOU ALL VOTED FOR?

It's now or never folks. Are we going to stand idly by and watch our country fall to the wayside piece by piece? Or are we going to stand up as FREE Americans and take it back, make it ours again.... The system has been corrupted and organized in such a way so that failure is the only result. Should we wait any longer to make a stand, we will no longer have a government to make a stand against......

Wait for it, because the Fed's not done yet. They will be printing up another stimulus that will further cripple the average American family.

Good why do they deserve a raise EVERY FREAKIN YEAR... We are not guranteed a pay raise EVERY year why should they....Same with teacher in the unions the only people I know who can suck at their job and get a nice pay raise EVERY year is a fed worker or a freaking union teach it's BS... Obama better do something or he can say goodbye to the white house in 2012 kick the bums out!!!!!

So, two years with no pay increases... Now they can relate to the majority of those who have not gotten a raise or a bonus for years. Meanwhile, the costs of employer sponsored health care continue to rise and plans continue to change as options are cut out while still paying more.

Time for a reality check folks...Maybe the private sector earnings avg. will now be able to catch up to the federal employee earnings average. Doubtful, because it would take much more than a 1% raise or no raise to do it.

all the money that was used to bail out the banks and that went directly to the banks, SHOULD have went to the people, broken down ...every u.s citezen would have recieved $350, 000! they would have used that to pay thier debt, and would have went on shopping sprees pumping the money back into the economy! but no! it goes straight to the bankers and look where we are now? complete economic collapse...so what happened to all the money?? what was the point? the state of the economy, cutting back on benefits for those who are in need of it, taxing the people through the nose, take take take but no give! and obama had the cheek to spend millions on that trip and his massive entourage?

bout bloody time there were cuts in the governments wallets!

It's been five years since my last raise. COLA? According to my checks, there's no such thing...

My sister, who works in corrections, as a union rep. is fighting against a state (Washington) mandated un paid leave program at the penitentiary she works at. If enacted, this would leave the staff seriously, and dangerously, understaffed. The solution? Lockdown. The reaction? There will be lawsuits, expensive ones, filed on behalf of the prisoners by the ACLU very shortly after that.

So... Federal workers don't get a raise? Welcome back to our world, folks...we've missed you.

As always the lower classes are asked to pay for something they didn't do. Everyone demonizes government workers-well they are just people. And government isn't evil-it's just a system. People are evil. People are screwing up. You want to see the average government work? Get yourself to the post office. Go to AAFES (yep that's government work). Go on post and head to a motor pool. Just go on post period, everyone there works for the federal government. Of course, the new congress certainly isn't going to freeze their pay or give up their health care. The president isn't going to give up anything. You know who they are hitting now? Soldiers. They are telling military famlies to expect to pay more for tricare and to expect a pay freeze. Yea, those poor people get shot at and their own people screw them over. And no they don't get paid that much really. If they left the service and went to private sector work (Xe, KBR etc.) They'd make twice what they get today.

There is nothing wrong with Social Security as an idea. I personally think it's better that people pay taxes so old folks don't have to live out on the street. Then again, I remember there is a real social cost for everything. If the old do not have a safety net of some sort then you are looking at them having to work (and taking jobs from the young who will be unemployed) or you are looking at homeless elderly people. Either way there is a cost, and it's going to cost more than just paying the elderly a few hundred dollars a month.

What we need is a New Deal. Yep, we need another one. We need to work on improving the infrastructure of this country. Did you guys know we still use natural gas pipes made out of wood in some parts of the country? Oh yes, it's that bad. Where do we get the money? Tax the bankers. A 1% tax on all stock trades, tax the banks on their profits, enforce the corporate income tax (it's a measly 2 to 3 percent and they even bitch about the cost to dodge it). Take that money they want to use to bailout Goldman Sachs and use it to build new high speed rail in this country. Screw them. If they want their for-the-rich Bush tax cut let them build factories here. Make them show actual proof they invest here otherwise let them cry. The solution is not to gut what little bit of a safety net this country has-it's tax the bankers. They did this to us, make them pay.

I don't see this as being a bad thing. The freaking Republicans didn't have the will to do these types of cuts when they had the Presidency, the Senate & the House & that's why I'm no longer a Republican. At least someone is willing to make the types of moves needed to slow down our slide.

I mean sure, he made the slide worse by dumping trillions of $$'s of dept on us, but finally someone is cutting something back.

I would say that certain people have been planning this for a long time. I don't think it was until Obama took office that the biggest push to see this final collapse take place started. But, IMO, it's a definite that all who are onboard now are very aware that this was a planned collapse, certainly not everyone in government is in on the corruption, but they certainly won't give us any real details.....

You know how it is. Would you rather be the Congressman or woman that tells the populace everything is about to fall apart and get crucified for it by your peers, or would you rather be the Congressman who keeps his/her mouth shut and lives to benefit from this collapse. They are already wealthy, they already have the bunkers built in case war comes to our soil. What else do they need to worry about? Certainly not the serfs who are the American workers. We mean nothing to them.

WANT TO SAVE ABOUT 8 BILL/YEAR

The above link is a thread that I started last year. It never really got much attention thanks to the oversight of most political minded members. Either way, it still applies to us all at this current point in time. I tried to bump it so some of you would see it but this is an easier way to get the word out.

Reduce congress and the senate by half, take away full salary retirement plans, cut pork barrel spending and ear marks.... These are ideas that everyone can see value in and could offer some very broad based gains for the country as a whole.... to the tune of almost 10 billion a year.

The only raise they get every year is a 2% cost of living raise. Which depending on where you live isn't enough to help you live where the government wants you working. The reason they get it is because they need people to work there. Most of the time it's about 30-50 cents an hour. Unless you are on salary then it's probably about 800 bucks a year.

800 bucks a year omg get those people! Yeah 800 bucks a year which is quickly taken away by more taxes, higher insurance payments which go up every year. So after all of the taxes and insurance payments you might see what 200 bucks extra for a whole year? As I said in another thread most of the work done by our government is done by contractors. You want to cut government waste start with the people who are at the top of our government cut their salary, freeze their pay, cut their bonuses then go after contracts. Most government employees do not get paid that much. There are people on the top that do cut their pay and freeze it. When I used to live near a military base most of the federal workers there were making less than 35k a year. For the area that wasn't a lot of money.

People want to complain because the government spends money, but they forget that their private sector was what put us in this mess. All those private sector companies that got greedy and took money from americans? they are still doing it.

And for the record the agency I work for is fully funded by fees from our services. It's not funded by tax payers so you can shove the argument about being paid by tax payers up your bum. But I do agree a freeze at the top of agencies is needed. When people at the department of defense are getting paid 130k to sit in an office that's a bit much. And the department of defense has gotten huge.

The point still remains that Federal employees don't need a pay raise each year. Especially when the rest of haven't seen an annual raise in ... hmmm... ever!

I watched Obama's speech. IMO he should have offered to freeze federal wages indefinitely! Oh and by the way, this is only in the civilian sector.... Government officials are still un touched by this pay freeze.

What a load of Bravo Sierra.
