Aye, I agree with you there, just wanted to point out that the legislation is in place for such occurences.

It makes one wonder just what % of the general population is aware of the powers the governments have given themselves through back-bench deals to introduce laws on the quiet, over the years?

This just illustrates it perfectly, the power to theoretically shut down the greatest information resource globally, and I bet only ~ 5% of the people know of such legislation.

Considering that Julian works directly with different media sources during the wiki release, he's probably the most creditable source to the D-Notice claim.

D Notice is Type 1 and Type 5

Trying to embargo a story is like telling somebody not to look at the naked person standing in front of them . . . the more you say don't, the more their interest is piqued.

In this day and age where the almighty media buck is hard to come by, you'll see more outlets publishing than withholding.

What's the government going to do, not talk to the media again?

Riiiiiiiiight. Then who's going to soft sell their quasi-criminal behavior.

Face it . . . the government needs the media.

Sorry, but this is hype by Wikileaks

What is meant by ‘slapping a D-Notice on’ something?

* This phrase is still used by people, and sounds dramatic, but it is no longer what actually happens! DA-Notices are not issued for particular incidents. The 5 standing Notices cover various eventualities, and, if necessary, the editor's’ attention is just drawn by the DA-Notice Secretary to the advice in the appropriate Notice.

DA Notices FAQ

No notice will have been "issued" because the standing notices are already in place.

This is not related to Wiki,

I've been in touch with people I know in Whitehall - "D-notice" has been enforce for a while and is not related to wikileaks

It may have been the Wikileak's UK media contact was issued a reminder that the D-Notice is still in place. Something must have triggered the comment, even if it is hype. I guess we'll have to wait and see how this unfolds.

What came to my mind when I read this was the link between the potentially damaging information and the proposed COICA. This may be the event that pushes it through.

Also noted, is that the reaches of COICA is international in scope. Doesn't just affect the US.

I for one am all for these releases. The government may try to quash these releases but that only gives credence to the info that these "Cables" contain. The US ambassador to Canada warned us that these could damage relations.

Just an example on my part:

USAC(US ambassador Canada): Canada isn't going to support us in our war in Iraq. Their mentally retarded leader(Chretien) says we have no evidence Iraq had anything to with 911.

USSD(US State Department in Washington): Those f-ing pussies in their egloos, I can't believe that French retard isn't going to support us. The Canadian people are behind him too. What a bunch of inbred hicks! We should just nuke their country for not obeying us.

Could the secret cables contain language like this. I would assume so as the senders thought they were secure. I can only imagine what was said about countries and their leaders. I think they should be released as more and more people here what is contained in them then maybe we can start fixing this messed up world.

I'll be like Bumblebee and use song to describe things

Great Song and I loved the movie "Donnie Darko"

AN EASY SOLUTION TO STICK YOUR FINGERS UP TO OUR GOVERNMENTS CENSORSHIP is to download and print many copies of the report and leave them on buses train stations etc for people to read and ask them to download and print copies themselves. Like to see them censor that

My husband works for the DOD and has a high security clearance. He is a lifetime worker for the federal govt that is neither a civilian nor enlisted. Saying that ( and nothing more so dont bother asking) , he has been ordered NOT to visit the site. Violating this will result in investigation, termination of employment, and/or imprisonment. As I understand, even civ employees and contractors were given this order, so any here can confirm this was ordered earlier this year.

These are classified documents that are coming out in the near future that are cables and communication between the US and Israel.. if you didnt know. This is a HUGE threat to national security and personally I am outraged that this is happening. Sure, my government isnt perfect, neither is yours. However, my people are innocent of these things and by releasing them we are put in danger. Our people here on the homeland plus our people in other countries and on the battlefields.

RANT:One great thing.. we are and have been attached to the DOD for decades yet we can criticize and speak against our gov without punishment. And do regularly. Seditious speech is pretty different than having an opinion and voicing it. I see that some dont understand that distinction here as seen on other threads. Some dont seem to grasp that we have a great right that other countries do not afford their citizens.. for now. I sadly believe it will not last forever because we have a particularly thin skinned president at the moment who okays 4th amendment violations and supports them.
/rant

Call me whatever you want.. freedom of speech does not cover this one. I rarely agree with my government.. but this isnt against my government.. this is dangerous to my American brothers and sisters. Its also so much more dangerous for the Israelis and Brits. WHy dont some of you realize what is and can happen.. what is probable. 2 wrongs dont make a right.. I cant believe some adults still believe it does. This informaiton could have been used responsibly to indict whomever is doing wrong.. the international community has avenues to do this. It is irresponsible and dangerous for it to be dramatically released in the ways it has been in the places it has been.. kind of like a child intercepting a love not in class and not handling it right but running around ridiculing the people involved. Same childish irresponsible behavior.

Also, from what we are being ordered to do or not to do.. yes, confirmation we are monitored and watched concerning our internet behavior and where we visit IS logged. Id suspected with no proof before.. this is a little proof.

Very well written. I have to agree with you on a lot of levels. One thing I was concerned about is the fact that the information provided will be heavily laced with political propaganda, and directional programming to pull different agendas. So there will be a lot of statements released in these documents that will be inaccurate at best, if not out-in-out lies, to achieved the desired results at the time the statements were issued.

That's how the game works in a nutshell. The implications of re-publishing data of this nature with names attached is jaw-dropping to say the least. As the infamous words of Pontius Pilate relate, "What is truth?" The truth never seems to change the outcome when politics are involved.

I see your concern.. and only because though I have never been to the site, but I have read discussions here and elsewhere about some of the informaiton.. and you have hit the nail on the head. I mean, trust me, Im madly curious about communications between Israel and the US that are being spoken about.. but not enough to pretend knowing is worth endangering so many lives.

You bring up could points about this being dangerous for average joes as it could incite further terrorism. However, playing Devil's Advocate here:

How many lives have been lost due to the way our Governments have acted? We aren't addressing the real problem that is causing global terrorism in the 1st place. It is poor Foreign Policy by several Nations most notably the US interventionist foreign policy of the last 65 years. Number 1 reason for terrorists is horrible foreign policy.

If these cables, as damaging as they will be help to get the sheeple thinking then it's worth it.

How many people will die from the release of this info? Probably less than 100(just a guess).

How many will die if we continue down the path we've been on over the last 65 years? Millions.

So I ask you this ATS, which are you more comfortable with?

I believe the people have a right to know what their government is saying, and what they are up to behind their little classified fence. The old national security crap doesn't cut it for me anymore, they have outplayed that card.

The american public just do not have enough interest in subjects to worry the gov, lol.

I agree. I deal with that all the time digging through .mil sites. Tons of stuff, but the true secret stuff is not on our internet. But even when you show the public, very few even bother to look.

Internet kill switch? who needs it... All you need is a couple retired generals to hint on MSM that an odd airplane contrail was a Chinese missile as a show of force launched by a covert Chinese sud 35 miles off LA and you have the internet (and ATS) confuddled for a week

But then if you actually DID leak something that actually IS classified as National Security... they can already give you a free vacation to Gitmo and even shoot you for treason for mere possession of a classified document.

So why the fuss? Personally I wish they would let the world know the state of the art of space weapons that all those missing trillions went to purchase, but heck the public doesn't even care when the Federal Reserve cannot account for 9 TRILLION dollars for FY 2009 alone

They don't issue warnings about specifics. They simply request compliance with the standing notices.

Wikileaks cannot claim that specific requests are about them, because the D-Notice committee would not mention Wikileaks, they would simply mention the standing notices relating to certain areas.

It's sad, but in the US there are STILL a lot of people who don't think it is news until it is on the tv news at 6pm.

If it never makes it there, it must not have been a 'credible' story in the first place.

This is one of the ways the media is controlled, that, and covering Cholera in Haiti for 1- seconds right behind Lady Gaga wore a dress of turkey necks, with 5 minutes of Bristol Palin following it.

I highly suspect that a lot of people on ATS are more intelligent than the general population, and maybe a bit crazier too - crazy enough to question things.

that is the biggest problem of all.

IT ISN'T !!!

That's why it is being released like this.
Nobody is indicted
Nobody goes to jail
Nobody pays restitution
Nobody apologizes
Nothing changes !!!!

A prime example of this is the kiddie porn ring
in Belgium that almost caused a revolution.
People in high places came in and took the
magistrate investigator off the case and dismissed
charges against 10 people arrested. Those
people were leading the investigation team
to gov figures so they hushed it up. And only 1
guy is in prison when there should be hundreds.

This is NOT justice

This is a corrupt system hiding behind
a veil of secrets and scapegoats.

And 2 of those lil girls died.

These are the reasons why
wikileaks exist. Because the govs
police us .....

but not a single damn soul
polices the governments.

They need to be held accountable
for their actions. And when we the public
don't give a damn what our government
does and hinders the justice needed
then those people are just as guilty
as the ones directly involved.

And another prime example is
Goldman Sachs. Insider trading
out the wazu, and did anybody go to
jail? Nope, they got raises, bonuses
and bailouts.

This is not a society based upon laws
but a society based upon tyranny
and oppression.

So don't hand me the national security BS
that this release is gonna endanger lives,
people are already dying from the status quo.

The questions arent how our govt has acted or what deaths have happened previously. Each move has to be judged in itself without applying the unrelated previous actions. The question is what happens with this current situation as it stands alone. I do not think that this is the way to handle it or the correct way to get the information out in a way to prevent any more death, chaos, or war. If the information is what I fear it is, it will be vastly more than 100 as you suggested that would die directly resulting from the information. Maybe not immediately, but it would be the root cause. Its concerning 3 countries and the citizenry of all 3.US, UK and Israel... adding whomever has been involved peripherally or whomever the leakers decide to erroneously implicate as they have done in the past. Of these 3 countries all 3 decided to make it classified for a reason. In defiance of all 3 countries these people recklessly throw stolen info out there in a manner that is harmful, not to mention their own manipulation of the data.
