U.S. Moves Spy Aircraft in Preparation for N.Korean Nuke Test

The U.S. Air Force moved a WC-135 Constant Phoenix reconnaissance jet from the U.S. mainland to the Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, in September in preparation for another nuclear test by North Korea, the Sankei Shimbun reported Tuesday.

Apparently the U.S. believes that another nuclear test is imminent after unusual movements were detected at the North's test site.

Now a few reminders...
N. Korea believed to have 200,000 special warfare troops: S. Korean estimate

North Korea is believed to have about 200,000 special warfare troops, an 11 percent increase from two years earlier, according to a South Korean government estimate released Sunday.

The North is also believed to have some 1,000 ballistic missiles, about 2,500-5,000 tons of chemical weapons agents, about 700 pieces of long-range artillery and about 600-700 computer hacking specialists, according to a defense ministry report submitted to Rep. Kim Ock-lee of the ruling Grand National Party.

North Korea is no push-over.

And from a week ago...
South Korean soldiers on the front line with North Korea will be able to bundle up this winter in new high-tech heat-generating parkas,
Ready for a winter war against the North.

And from early 2010...
North Korea masses 50000 troops on border

The deployment began two or three years ago and seven 7,000-strong divisions are now in place, an unidentified senior government official told Yonhap news agency.

So those troops are still there... I wonder if the buildup has been continuing? And how many troops there are there now... ?

Or maybe China lied to Kim and they will roll into the North...

Or follow the Art Of War... attack your enemies where they are weakest and you are strongest... ECONOMY... They'll let US-SK roll in, take over... occupy North Korea... that way the US goes bankrupt...then China can just MARCH IN... maybe it's cheaper that way...

With reports of more artillery, will South Korea respond? On Tuesday, the President said retaliation would occur to any provocation.

The North is testing the patiences of the South and believe none of them will respond.

Yeah but it's artillery INSIDE THEIR BORDERS... not even shells in water... so it's not a provocation per say.

The new SK defense minister have been appointed... it's Kim Kwan-jin

General Kim Kwan-Jin, ROKA, was the 33rd Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Republic of Korea Armed Forces.

Nothing about his political beliefs... if he's more ``pro-war`` against North Korea or ``pro-keep our cool``...

according to this, war is inevitable.

seriously?

sinking USS George Washington is worth going back to the middle ages?

why are they talking about China's missiles being used to attack?

we all think that the US or China is trying to start a commotion with false flags and proxy wars, when according to this report its NK that is playing the US and China against each other.

I didn't believe in the article ``Chinese general want to sink the USS Washington even if it means nuclear war``...

But now this...

With the new development this morning, China might be concerned the North Koreans might hold an "exercise" on Sunday, too, thus putting them at odds with South Korea-United States.

I wonder if this change in stance would really be enough to cause a direct military conflict or a whole lot of diplomatic huffing and puffing?

However, with the ongoing currency battle going on between the US and China I also wonder if this is simply not being egged on to help boost economies (after all, war IS good for business, much better than "Black Friday" specials.... Black Friday may have a different meaning after today.

Pray for calmer heads to come to the fore.
Obs out

A proxy war, between China and America, with the the Koreans would be worthwhile for both economies. Each respected nation shall be providing arms and aid till it's ally, boosting exports and the economy. In other words, with my dusty old conspiracy hat, both China and America could be encouraging conflict.

War between China and America, directly, would be devastating to the economies - a proxy war wouldn't be.

I'm hoping someone can answer my question.

Lets just say that the US aircraft carrier arrives on schedule this Sunday despite warnings from China to not go ahead with any further military drills and provocations, and amid the drills something happens and North Korea conduct more attacks on the South.

We can safely say that the US and South Korea will retaliate immediately against the North. My concern here is what will China then do? Especially after directly warning against any further actions that could provoke war.

The most optimistic (I use the term lightly) scenario is that China would tolerate a 'limited bombing' of North Korea, such as military bases close to the South Korean border, and China (I think) would limit itself to much verbal chastisement of the US and South Korea, and perhaps carrying out naval exercises of it's own.

But as Vitchilo said, if there was any sign that there was a US-South Korean attempt to actually topple the government in Pyongyang, I believe China would intervene. Until such a time where China feels it could be allied with a South Korea that is not so close to the US, China likes having North Korea as it's buffer between itself and South Korea, and latterly Japan, both of whom who are allied to the US, and both of which have US military bases.

When I say China would intervene, this does not neccesarily mean joining North Korea in a war against the US and South Korea, although I think that is till a possibility if North Korea is attacked on a large scale.

I can envision China moving forces into North Korea, announcing it was carrying out a "peacekeeping" exercise in anticipation of the fall of the Pyongyang government in anticipation of "a destabilisation and a refugee crisis".

The momentum would then fall to whether US-South Korean forces potentially moving North, and Chinese forces moving South, in which we may see an agreement where China keeps a rump of North Korea as a buffer state, with a newly enlarged South Korea on the border or where the US and South Korea can tolerate a Chinese-controlled North Korea, where it literally becomes an extra province of China, strictly under control.

Another scenario, one less dramatic, is that China moves it's troops to the North Korean border, and utilises assets within Pyongyang to see to it a government and/or decisions come to the fore which bring about peace.

Will China sit idly by and watch as US and S. Korea bomb the North? If they do sit idly by, do you think it is possible the North could feel backed into a corner and do the unthinkable, airblast a nuke over the south? Would they be mad enough to do this anyway?

I am of the belief China has assets within Pyongyang, that is intelligence and people within the Pyongyang power and military structure, that can be utilised or pressured to ensure that a wider war does not happen and things do not get out of hand.

If China does not have that option they can use in circumstances that arise, then that's a cause for concern.

Of course that's the most optimistic scenarios I can think of, where we don't have WW3 and in no way are the only scenarios that could be envisioned. Quite easily too, could we see a repeat of the Korean War depending on who has sway in Beijing: The Old Guard who feel ties with North Korea should never be broken, because they were forged in blood in The Korean War, and The New Guard, who feel North Korea is becoming a liability to Chinese interests, and who feel that relations with South Korea are the way forward.

As for the South Korean claims they prevented a further North Korean artillery attack with their counter-barrage which they said caused damage to North Korean military positions, I have my doubts. One reason is that North Korea did not acknowledge, through their angry statements, any damage, deaths, or injuries to their side.

And another reason is that according to Reuters:

South Korean troops fired back 13 minutes later, causing unknown damage. Members of Lee's own party and opposition lawmakers accused the military of responding too slowly.

Link

So in that thirteen minutes between the initial North Korean artilliery barrage, and the South Korean counter-barrage, the North Koreans had the time, if they had the will or capability, to fire more shells on the island.

Which they didn't.

A worrying development....

Hundreds of former South Korean soldiers held a protest rally in the border town of Paju on Friday, accusing the government of being too weak. A small anti-North Korea protest was held in Seoul.

"The lazy government's policies towards North Korea are too soft," said Kim Byeong-su, president of the association of ex-marines, in Paju. "It needs to take revenge on a bunch of mad dogs."

Former South Korean soldiers holding a protest rally in a border town while accusing the government of being too weak is a concern. If just one of them is armed, if just one of them feels the renewal of The Korean War should have started already and are baying for revenge.....we could have trouble.

(Updates with new defence minister appointed)

By Jeremy Laurence and Park Ju-min

SEOUL, Nov 26 (Reuters) - South Korea named a career soldier as its new defence minister on Friday amid mounting criticism of the government's response to Tuesday's attack by North Korea, its heaviest bombardment since the 1950-53 Korean War. The move came hours after North Korea said that impending military exercises by the South and the United States were pushing the region towards conflict.

The presidential Blue House appointed Kim Kwan-jin, 61, former chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, to replace Kim Tae-young, who had tried to resign the defence portfolio in May following criticism of the government's response to a torpedo attack on a South Korean warship blamed on the North.

"(We) think nominee Kim, well-respected for professionalism and conviction, is the right person for the post in order to restore trust from people and boost morale in the entire military," presidential secretary Hong Sang-pyo told a news briefing.

North Korean shells rained down on the small South Korean island of Yeonpyeong on Tuesday, killing four people and destroying dozens of houses. The North said it was responding to live fire from the South into its waters.

"The situation on the Korean peninsula is inching closer to the brink of war due to the reckless plan of those trigger-happy elements to stage again war exercises targeted against the (North)," the North's official KCNA news agency said.

"...The army and people of the DPRK (North Korea) are now greatly enraged at the provocation of the puppet group (South Korea) while getting fully ready to give a shower of dreadful fire and blow up the bulwark of the enemies if they dare to encroach again upon the DPRK's dignity and sovereignty even in the least."

The aggressive language is typical of North Korean state-owned media, but the heightened tension was enough to depress the won as much as 2.2 percent. The stock market closed 1.3 percent down, in line with the wider region.

There was brief panic in the capital Seoul in the afternoon when television reported sounds of artillery fire near Yeonpyeong. But the military said the artillery fire was distant and no shells landed in South Korea. It appeared to be a North Korean drill.

el problem is that the US will be directly involved putting its own forces on the ground. if that happens and the Chinese are found to be supplying NK, then it won't be a proxy war for long. what about Japan? you know they are itching to move their navy around the sea.

This is true, with the US having 30K troops on the ground it would be difficult for them NOT to get directly involved with any conflict. A proxy war may spiral out of control in short order.

China warns against military acts as U.S. ship nears

BEIJING, Nov 26 (Reuters) - China on Friday warned against any military acts in its exclusive economic zone, in response to Washington's decision to send an aircraft carrier near a South Korean island recently shelled by North Korea.

"We oppose any unilateral military act conducted in China's exclusive economic zone without approval", China's Foreign Ministry said in an online response to a question regarding China's position on the U.S. carrier George Washington participating in joint naval exercises in the region.

The exclusive economic zone is a sea zone up to 200 nautical miles from a country's coast.

China may feel there's a good chance that the US and South Korea may be going to war with North Korea and so are putting their foot down, or are simply warning the US and South Korea against military exercises in it's neighbourhood.

Let's hope the latter.

What on earth do they mean by this? Do they consider the military exercises a "unilateral military act"? Or are they saying that they would oppose the use of force if NK provokes the forces in the area.
If they mean the latter then this is what I would expect from China. If they mean the former, then this may get very bumpy, very fast.
