Woman arrested in China for using Twitter

A woman in China is believed to be the first person in the world to be imprisoned for using Twitter

The Independent reported Sunday that the woman, Cheng Jianping, was sentenced to a year in a labour camp for re-posting a Tweet from her fiancé. Twitter's chief executive, Dick Costolo, posted a message that read: 'Dear Chinese Government, year-long detentions for sending a sarcastic Tweet is neither the way forward nor the future of your great people.' Twitter is blocked in China, but some rights activists have managed to bypass the controls.

Hua Chunhui, Cheng's fiancé, said the original Tweet was on recent anti-Japanese protests in China.
It read: 'Anti-Japanese demonstrations, smashing Japanese products, that was all done years ago by Guo Quan (an activist and expert on the 1937 Nanking Massacre). It's no new trick. If you really wanted to kick it up a notch, you'd immediately fly to Shanghai to smash the Japanese expo pavilion.'

Cheng re-posted this and added: 'Angry youth, charge!' Cheng had earlier put out a message supporting Liu Xiaobo, the jailed pro-democracy campaigner who has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Hua said Cheng arrived at a labour re-education centre in central China's Henan Province Wednesday.

That sounds rather menacing. Why don't they just say "re-programming"? This is a bit harsh imo and I tend to agree with Twitter's chief exec on this one. Gotta love the Chinese Government!

When I read things like this sometimes I wonder why there are people over here in America that would rather go live over there or think its better. I am not at all suggesting that their are not "nicer" areas to live in over in China, however your freedom of speech is more or less abolished.

who would risk their freedom to use twitter? who uses twitter anyway? i don't even use facebook or myspace. people are so egotistical and stupid, no one really cares what you are doing and it probably isn't that exciting. maybe twitter is cool if you are a celebrity and all but otherwise you are just an idiot.

Not for using twitter but for writing something that was discrediting her government.

China knows that twitter, facebook, youtube, myspace, google, yahoo etc etc are all DoD funded and directed for security reasons. Why do you think they were so hard on them when they tried to move the accepted line while operating over there.

The internet is used to program in the same way as FOX and CNN, they know this and have decided to STOP any undue influence. You honestly think they care if people look at porn? NO of course not, what they care about is how the NWO is using porn websites for social engineering (changing people's perceptions of acceptable and unacceptable behaviour)
