What is this ball at about the 10 o'clock position relative to the sun which looks almost like a star trying to peer out from behind the sun? It's
one of the strangest looking sunspots / flares I've ever seen.
I'd assume that would be a flare. It looks like one to me and i don't really think it looks all that strange. It definately wouldn't be a sun spot,
since those are on the surface of the sun and we cannot see that in this image.
The item being shown isn't the sun. It's the sun's corona.
The sun is actually being obscured by the red disc with the circle in it. And what's in the picture is a fairly standard view of the corona... and
the starfield behind it.
