Kudos to Russian's! Use Satan ICBM for profits, page

I love when I see russian success in their fledgling democracy. They used an old 10 warhead ICBM to commericaly place satelites from several different nations into orbit for profit!

Awesome use of machines designed to kill millions. Grats to you Russians watching this site! Id like to see more weapons used for peacefull purposes. Kinda makes it worth some of that money wasted on killing machines.

The US has been doing this since the 1960's. Remember the original Atlas boosters (I think it was the Mercury missions)? Those were ICBM's. The Titan IV that is the US's heavy lift vehicle? It uses a Titan ICBM booster. Boeings Delta series? They are mased on the Thor IRBM.

A company called Orbital sciences also makes commercial launch vehicles based on both Minuteman and Peackeeper lower stages (the most recent launch was a Peacekeeper based rocket carrying a "weather" payload for Taiwan).

I think Titan-Centaur combination is US's most powerfull rocket booster. (at least until that Delta 4 heavy comes)

Actually, the Titan IV will still have a greater lift capability (into LEO) - but not by much.

I'm sure later down the line the EELV's will catch up

Mostly this post was to congratulate them on turning old war stuff into something good for their nation (money). Was not intended to say hey they are doing better than us etc... Read the article its a very cool use of old weapon.

Speaking of using old junk turned useful thats basically what DU (depleted uranium) is. BTW just off the top of my head I remember the SS-18 Satan had the greatest range of any russian ICBMS (not sure what that # is) and it had the most powerful payload of any ICBM in the world. Plus it had multiple-reentry-launch vehicles.

Just hope they remember to remove the warheads before launching.

It uses a Russian Zenit booster. I'm not sure of it's lineage either...

satan! thats a bitching name for an ICBM. i think we should change the name of ours, but then again they are living up to their names
