He made his threat to a member of the cabin crew and never entered the plane's cockpit.

The pilot sounded the alarm and headed back to Franz Joseph Strauss airport from whence the plane had taken off at 8:47 pm (1847 GMT).

The plane landed safely back in Munich at 9:30 pm (1930 GMT).

There was no immediate word on the motive for the bomb scare. Preliminary enquiries suggested the perpetrator had not attempted to hijack the plane and have it flown to another destination. Police believe it was an isolated incident and not a terrorist or political act.

Police were interviewing the crew and passengers, most of whom were Turkish, as part of their enquiries.

The man, who was not named, was in Germany on a one-month visa. He told police he had been trying to get back in touch with his estranged wife, who lived in Germany, but that she had refused.

On the plane home, he had decided he could not face his parents and tell them about the separation, according to Dieter Hillebrand, president of the Upper Bavaria police division.
