Most big gatherings of world leaders draw protesters, but the issues at this week’s Group of 20 summit don’t fit the normal agenda of protest groups.
Capital reserve requirements. IMF voting and financial contribution quotas. Financial safety nets. Infrastructure investments in poor countries.
Issues like these are difficult to oppose and don’t lend themselves to catchy slogans.
But there has been one big protest against the G-20 this week, when several thousand people gathered at City Hall plaza with general complaints about globalization and the connections between government and corporate power. Organizers claimed 40,000 but the plaza is only the size of a couple soccer fields. And there are pockets of ongoing protests around Seoul.
