Actually in some parts of the photo Samkent posted the link to, there may be some of that going on.

It makes sense that could happen.

I found some links about it, check out the first one, it has this quote...

In just a few hours a contrail that begins life only a few meters in width can spread to cover more than 20,000 square kilometers. —NASA Langley Cloud and Radiation Research Center

Cool photos! I wonder what Sailor Sam thinks of these photos?

On the one hand I've got Sailor Sam telling me he's never seen the contrails get wider than the plane:

No contrail I have ever seen is wider than the plane in front of it.
Must have been some plane!

On the other hand I've got NASA telling me something completely different. With all the conflicting information posted in this thread how are we supposed to know what to believe?

I know some people don't really trust NASA but I'm leaning toward their explanation of big contrails in this case.

Well I cant remember seeing a contrail smaller than the plane..You normally have to look hard to see the plane in front..

More than likely it was a missile test sent to china lake, claif missile testing range on the other side of LA in the middle of the Mohave desert. I was in 29 palms for three years as a corpsman and made trips from San Dog to 29 and china lake a couple of times. The military doesn't answer to the civilian community. How many of you knew that there was a 100yd wide 5 mile long rip in the 29 palms base north of Joshua tree, Ca after the last 7.0 earth quake? No body that wasn't there knew about it, same with mil ops......We only know what they tell us.
Also the "base" of a con trail is nonexistent meaning there is no base, period the end, no base. The horizon on the ocean is only a few miles from your eye, let alone what it would be on land with all the hills, mountains, trees and buildings.
A pilot is trained to observe his surroundings for such strange anomalies in order to keep his passengers safe as well as keep the flight tower informed. A pilots testament to strange flying things should be considered as precious information.
I am no expert, how ever I am also not an idiot. We as thinking individuals MUST think for ourselves.

Wow, is that timelapsed and if so, for how long?

It would be an instantaneous snapshot just like your handheld camera.

The conspiracy people feel this picture shows they are spraying us with something. But then these are the same people who are afraid to turn off the lights at night.

He, I've always said if the wanted to poisonous us there sure are easier ways, like the water supply

But it does show you the amount of pollution jets cause..

Who said a contrail has a base?

I think every post in this thread I've read agrees that it doesn't. So what's your point in saying that?

Nobody that I've seen who claims that video shows a contrail, thinks that contrail has a base. It's all high altitude contrail.

That's correct.

"base" is a non-sequitur in describing a contrail...they are horizontal, and may have a 'beginning', and an 'end'.

The only term even close to "base" would be the same as we refer to clouds, and their heights....often the :height" of a cloud (in terms of altitude MSL) when reported means that altitude is the "base" (bottoms) of the cloud(s).

"sky coverage", for aviation-related MET reports (actually full acronym is 'METAR') many years ago was given (Internationally) as a fraction of eight (called "octas"). That term was never used in the United States, and the U.S. and Canada were alone, with different formats...until 1996, when the International standards were revised, adapted and adopted worldwide. Hence, the old U.S. acronyms ('SA' and 'SP') were dropped, 'METAR' is standard, and "octas" were dropped in favor of the U.S. abbreviations 'SKC', 'FEW', 'SCT', 'BKN' and 'OVC'. (Since International airline pilots are supposed to speak English, in order to fly into the States, they could understand the terms' reference). But, the original method and determination (octas) are still used by aviation weather observers. Each description in English abbreviated = the old "octa" reference.

SKC = 0 clouds, of course
FEW = 1-2 octas
SCT = 3-4 octas
BKN = 5-7 octas
OVC = 8 octas

'BKN' and 'OVC' are also considered and called "ceilings", in the aviation parlance. In that case, the words "base" and "ceiling" are synonymous.

So, old days, we Americans would go to, say, Paris and have to read the weather print-outs (or hear it reported on the automated "robot" voice that was constantly transmitted on certain radio frequencies) which might have said, for example, "3 octas @ 60" (SCT at 6,000) and we'd convert it in our heads...and think "scattered" as we visualized it.

Contrails, by themselves, usually aren't even going to be part of this....however, over time, when they DO persist, and other cirrus cloud cover develops, then they contribute to the overall report...but, in nay case, contrails (and cirrus) are well above the 25,000 feet and up, so impact flight operations not at all, in terms of airport operations.

Perhaps it’s been posted but NASA is chiming in on this missile hoax.

Weather sat image of contrail in question.

What happened to all the missile people? Did they give up on their position?

thanks for posting

Thus, I concluded again that it was a missile

Minnis said he can't definitively prove that the contrail came from an airplane. But, it is the "most likely" scenario given the data. "Later, while viewing some blogs, I found that the contrail corresponded remarkably well with flight AWE808, which flew from Hawaii to Phoenix; it showed the change in course to the northeast at the same location, further confirming my conclusion."

well-known specialists from nasa do'ir work properly
& again: no photos from satellite, no original viddy -- Yep, that was airplane
i smell [the/a] plan within [the/a] plan
+ so touchingly sounds that blogs confirm conclusion

To keep things in perspective these are three from California on the 9th November 2010. Expect more of this type of video as more and more people pay attention to these type of contrails. Although these trails are less persistent

I predict that when the conditions are right someone will replicate the events of 8th Nov and capture a tri-engined airliner producing such a contrail. I'm quite sure that Gil Leyvas armed with a scheduled flight timetable could replicated it and especially with a tri-engined wide body.
