Our brain stems are the same as a reptiles. That is no coincidence either, since reptiles and humans have both evolved from fish, if you go far back enough along the timeline.

Operating without assistance though, i dont know. Depends on what you believe. Of course, i believe the Brain is like a complex not-so-microcontroller that interprets incoming signals from the soul, and also sends input signals back to the soul.
