Do threads that get moved to the hoax forum or trash get their flags revoked?

So I was just pondering just now about threads that get moved to the trash bin or hoax forum.

Do the flags and stars in these threads get revoked?

Do they stay on the person's tally?

Hypothetically speaking, say a thread has over 400 flags and turns out to be a big fat lie and gets trashed or put in the hoax forum, does for example the OP lose all those flags?

I mean 400 is a LOT of flags and having them on ones profile for a misleading thread is misleading in itself when it comes to the WATS index, no?

Ponderings indeed!

The flags and stars stay as far as I can tell. If that provides a misleading figure in the WATS index, it isn't fair, but does it matter?

There are flag-whoring threads by repeat offenders that fall short of [HOAX] even though we know the poster doesn't believe their own BS. These can build up the numbers and be just as misleading in terms of credibility or quality of the member's posts.

I bet you can run five suspects off the top of your head right now lol

I agree Chad,
A certain thread based on a cartoon has hundreds of flags and stars.
If it fails, is it not a hoax?

A cartoon.
And a doom prediction.

What is the result.
Thread after thread now on November doom.
Its almost as bad as the GFL prediction a few years back.

Anyway.

It get's better. I heard December covers episodes of Futurama. And more terrifying than an Earth changing event, is a Galaxy changing event!

Is it a hoax if you are just saying an event might happen?

Hm, I was curious about the same thing. But stars and flags are not meant to represent the validity of something are they? They're an indication of how many people resonate with a poster and the post's content, irrespective or how right or wrong to others it may be, or how valid or invalid their claims are. I dunno if it would be fair to strip someone of their stars if their thread ends up being a hoax, particularly if it wasn't an intentional hoax. Hundreds of stars and flags on hoax threads says something about members of the ATS community, what they resonate with and what they're willing to believe...

predictions threads shouldnt be allowed to receive any kind of flag

and they should have their own board so you can control that

AMEN ZORGON!!!! Control .. all it is. Petty little peanuts.

I do think i have an idea though. What about negative flags?

The system at the moment is one direction thing, you can ONLY accumulate more flags. Why not have a yay or nay thing. Flags accrued are the difference between those who like it and those who don't.

Maybe if we give these old woman a button to click, that will save us from having to read their irrelevant rubbish. That would be greatly appreciated while trying to follow a thread "they disapprove of".

The problem with this is that views expressed on ATS tend to be minority viewpoints, even in an ATS context.
I'll heavily oversimplify to illustrate my point;
Supposing there were ten schools of thought on ATS, all mutually exclusive, each one held by about one-tenth of ATS.
In that case, every thread would have 90% of ATS disagreeing with it and hating it. Give that 90% the power to add negative flags, and every thread would drown in them.
That is over-simplified, as I said, but I'm not sure that it's very far from the truth.

I'm thinking that only applies once the date is passed. For example, once December 21, 2012 is over and we're all still alive, the mods are gonna have to clean out a huuuuge number of threads.
