I live in Australia... this could be a problem

As suggested by my past posting history I don't respond much but I'm slightly intrigued by topics such as this. It's about 10% facts and inquisitive questions which become redundant fairly quick and the other 90% is doom and gloom.

I mean the facts are what they are, please try not to turn every event larger than the New York Parade as some obscure Biblical passage that will end the world as we know it. As humorous it is it gets useless pretty fast.

I mean every other week some major political figure I've never heard of is going to disclose that Aliens exist(why is it there's never a clear picture? Why are the videos always at night and with a shaky camera or vague pictures?) or how our World died a few months ago due to the Gulf Spill. No, surely it was the secret organization that was going to take over the World every 2-3 months. No, impossible it's going to be Mt. Merapi in Indonesia that ends or begins the end of our turbulent few thousand years on Earth.

I guess maybe after the world ends again when Mt. Meraphi next year they'll be a few cosmic events that occur that will end our existence again and let's not forgot 2012. That's just salt on the wound.

Back onto topic though I would say let's see what happens. It's a dynamic situation and most people just like seeing what "may" happen in the .0000000000001% chance that this event turns into more than a few thousand dead from clogged up air and maybe some random debris. Some individuals are posting intriguing and provocative comments that sure seem neat, others are just pretentious who are, in all likelihood home rats who spend most of their time praying some amazingly disastrous event occurs to justify their life doom and gloom it big time for years online.

are you under the impression that the recent tsunami in Indonesia had something to do with Merapi? It was due to the EQ that hit, not the volcano.

Several airlines have temporarily suspended flights between Singapore and Jakarta because of volcanic ash from Merapi volcano. Among those affected were Singapore Airlines, Japan Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Lufthansa and Cathay Pacific. Domestic flights have been unaffected. The eruption of Merapi caused an additional 85 deaths, bringing the total to over 130. Scores of people have been burnt by hot ash and gas from pyroclastic flows. Merapi volcano is currently undergoing an explosive eruptive phase. During the past 100 years eruptions at the volcano we mainly caused by lava dome collapses. Eruptions of Merapi volcano during the 7–19th centuries A.D were more explosive and similar to the current events.

well i think that its connected, have been following seismic activity a while now, and some deep tremors connects the dots. The 7.7 might have been what triggered merapi, or atleast an important factor.

Until now Indonesia's capital safe from volcanic eruption. but by looking from other point of view, Jakarta is susceptible to other natural disasters such as flood and earthquakes.

Even though they are close to 1500km apart? at a depth of 20.06km? when looking at the history, here why did similar one's not set off Merapi then? why not wake up one of the dozens much closer to where the quake actually hit?

I agree, star for the picture, it's beautiful! it's amazing how the earth can create such beauty through such violence.

I heard an interesting quote on BBC news a few minutes ago.

Basically, a guy in Sydney (not sure who he was) was talking about the Quantas Airbus A380 problem. He said at one point "but to be fair, this Airbus disaster isn't as bad as the ash cloud later this year - oh sorry I meant earlier this year."

That interested me because he didn't say where the ash cloud was, although he was obviously talking about the Iceland ash cloud. But did he really mean earlier this year, or do people in the know have a clear idea about this Merapi volcano going off?

Although it could easily just be a slip of the tounge, not a clever hint towards this Merapi Volcano going off.

well im no expert, just find it very interesting, what are the odds of 7.7 and volcano going on at that close range. And if you look at the seismic page, quite often the entire earth is rumbling, or plates moving. But as i said, im no expert

Is it not true that all of these Earthquakes and Volcanoes in the Pacific are tied together by the Ring of Fire often referred to by the press and scientists?

I live in California and have looked into the ring of fire as it seems that often when an earthquake goes off in this Ring another is soon going and it seems to sweep around the Ring.

I think that all the earthquakes and volcanoes in Indonesia are tied together and giving us a glimpse of the possibilities throughout the Ring in the future.

And, yes, Mt. St. Helens is in the ring as well.

If you are a geologist I would love to hear your thoughts on this Ring of Fire and the activities going on in Indonesia as they might (or not) impact the other locals situated on the Ring such as Japan, Alaska, Mexico, California, etc.
