I would imagine that undertaking a conference would be quite expensive, so building a fund is a great idea. We could perhaps buy shares in the
conference? Starting at a dollar and those ATS members with a little more cash can buy additional shares. If the conference gets some sponsorship,
then we might get some money back for beer tokens.
We need to find someone who knows about such things.
I can see the problems though, with converting a virtual community into a real people event.

I think this can work in time, it would be easy to weed out the others with registration as someone posted above, name tags, etc
