SkyNewsBreak Reports: Two US fighter jets are escorting a passenger flight to JFK Airport. (twitter)

Seriously, WTF is going on?

A plane will only be escorted in the event of a hijack, I believe. That's the protocol.

My Reuters twitter says there's no known threat and that's it's associated with the other packages from Yemen. If no threat, then why the escort?

Odd I agree.

I think it might be a tad over reaction. But I am not sure.

It is a bit bizarre to escort a plane with two fighter jets without a serious incident on board.

It's related to the over-hype that started earlier, with the UPS jets, and "suspect" packages....the Emirates airliner has a "package from Yemen" on board, as cargo. It is just an over-reaction.

The White House

Office of the Press Secretary

For Immediate Release October 29, 2010
Statement of White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs

Last night, intelligence and law enforcement agencies discovered potential suspicious packages on two planes in transit to the United States. Based on close cooperation among U.S. government agencies and with our foreign allies and partners, authorities were able to identify and examine two suspicious packages, one in East Midlands, United Kingdom, and one in Dubai. Both of these packages originated from Yemen. As a result of security precautions triggered by this threat, the additional measures were taken regarding the flights at Newark Liberty and Philadelphia International Airports.

The President was notified of a potential terrorist threat on Thursday night at 10:35, by John Brennan, Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counter-terrorism. The President directed U.S. intelligence and law enforcement agencies, and the Department of Homeland Security, to take steps to ensure the safety and security of the American people, and to determine whether these threats are a part of any additional terrorist plotting. The President has received regular updates from his national security team since he was alerted to the
threat.

Conflicting reports;

Some are suggesting a passenger jet with a "disturbance" on board, others are mentioning a cargo plane instead. However, I'm being told the plane is being forced to land...

In fact...I am hearing...

The US believe this is a "dummy run"

Nope.

I'm writing this at 15:25 EDT, airplane is still abut 80 miles from NYC.

flightaware.com...

There is NO THREAT!! Not from that airplane. It is over-hyped, typical for a slow news day...

(DHS is scrutinizing ALL manifests, passengers and cargo, of flights from the Middle East, especially Yemen....heightened awareness of possible plots, "dry run" tests is being suggested)

Yeah over-hyped is an understatement. This is a massive overreaction, if it's a "dummy run". Fighter jets are usually scrabbled in the event of a hijack. What a wonderful way to scare the population

Remind me never to order ink cartridges from America, or send them.

Thats a whole lot of action for planes with no real threat...

A crew member aboard a UPS plane arriving to Philadelphia from Paris, France later notified authorities on approach about a suspicious package. The crew member described a possible radiological component to the package, the incident report said. The two occupants safely exited the aircraft after landing in a remote area of the airport.

A second UPS plane was isolated near the UPS terminal at the Philadelphia airport before take off, the report said.

A third UPS plane, which arrived at Newark Liberty Airport from East Midlands in the U.K., was investigated, but UPS says it was cleared and proceeded on to Louisville, KY.

Two UPS trucks in Brooklyn and Queens, N.Y., were also investigated and cleared, officials said.

Law enforcement officials also are investigating a suspicious packages in Portland, Maine. No word on whether that package has any links to UPS or Yemen.

As an additional safety measure, FedEx embargoed all shipments originating from Yemen," said Maury Lane, spokesman for FedEx.

It seems so incoherent to me, unorganised and quite bizarre.

I find this ongoing event to be rather suspicious

Perhaps but this could definitely be a dry run considering the fake device on the toner cartridge. As the picture below shows, the device was homemade and intended to cause concern. The device looks like someone mounted the inside of a cell phone to the cartridge.
Here is the link: 'Manipulated' toner cartridge
