(I'm an American... just to be sure I understand correctly, from your context I assume a "letterbox" is like a "mail slot" in America? A small slot in the front door of someone's house in which the postal carrier deposits mail? I wasn't sure at first if a letterbox was like a mailbox that sits on a street corner for one to deposit letters in.)

#2 I entirely agree with Jon! I might not have lopped it off, but I would have grabbed on and tied that thing off so that he was a permanent fixture to my door. Then I would have gone around and had some fun!! Maybe urinated on him, or rubbed some peanut butter on there and set the dogs loose! Maybe I would have just left him like that and made a run into town for some groceries.

I don't think "killing" him was probably appropriate, but if it happened on more than one occurrence and if the guy was hopped up on drugs and alcohol, then the world is probably better off without him. 5 years seems fair. If UK is like USA he will be out in 18 months with good behavior.

I would have placed a toaster on the floor, plugged into the wall, turned on, and let the chap pee away.

That way, the guy gets quite a "shock" where it counts, and hopefully learns his lesson, and you don't go to jail. You just get soggy toast.

I would have grabbed the mans junk and kept a hold of it till he decided he didn`t need it or passed out from the pain. I think I would then be pretty satisfied that payment was justified and it actually was mine being sent to me to do with what I wanted. Plenty of punishment there but to kill a man is rather a stiff penalty.

I would have wired a 50,000 volt cattle fence charger inside the slot rigged so mail could go in without any danger but any conductive liquid would carry the charge out to its source.

Would not have killed him but would have given him a phobia of p**ing and maybe affected his sex life a little.

wow, if this is correct (which something tells me it is) then a broken system it is, indeed. as i live in florida, its completely okay to dispose of somebody trespassing on your property and endangering your family and life. not saying that this guy was doing either, but he was starting to push the boundary from what i read.

Some things to take note of.. If the guy Peeing in the letterbox had got away with it, what would have been next for the home owner? Im assuming that Mr Pepee s friends were there when he was washing his hall through the letterbox, as they tried to storm the guys house after the stabbing.

So, the picture now changes to one of the house holder being totally ridiculed in the eyes of the others. Is your anger level getting higher yet?

Now, what if the householder had just hurt the yob?, be it punched, kicked or whatever. What chance would he have had the next time he went out and would it have been petrol and not urine in his letterbox as revenge.

We are driven to things by others. The police in the area are the ones who deserve punishment for not protecting those in the area from neanderthal man.

Being from an area where crime like this is ripe, I have to say that I'm happy people are taking the law into their own hands.
By this, i'm not saying what this guy did was right. But let's look at the facts:
Innocent people having bricks thrown at their cars and windows for no apparent reason.
Being abused in the street, for no reason.
Having gangs of idiots hanging around outside your house causing problems.

I'm not saying that we should all go out and stab people who do this, but has anyone stopped to think that maybe the man didn't think he'd kill him? Isn't there a line between Murder and Manslaughter?

Plus at 25 years old you'd think the geezer would have grown up enough to set an example to his child. God forbid what the kid will do when it's older, probably go round throwing acid in people's faces....

We have a BIG traveller community just down the road, and although they don't bother anyone it's still a worry. Where I live there's always someone being dragged away, evicted or fighting. These gangs of yobs, what they do to people minding their own business is disgusting. If I caught a supposed mature man urinating through my letter box I'd have cut the damn thing off and made him eat it.

There comes a point, when you're a victim for so long of abuse and crime, that you just get sick to death of it and lash out. I'm sure everyone is guilty of doing this.

There probably wasnt alot the police could have done anyway, they are let down by a completely stupid judicial system, chances are they would have only be able to taken him down the cells for the night untill he sobered up. And then next day the yob and his mates go down to the innocent mans house and theaten him even more for calling the police.

Also in the UK you are aloud to defend your home with reasonable force, so he probably would not have been charged with assault for pushing or striking the yob. However not to the extent of some places in the US where he would have been ok to kill the guy.

To live in fear in your own home is a terrible thing.
A gang of thugs make your life hell, and you can’t sleep or rest.
And it may not only be you, but your family, that suffers abuse.

Here in Glasgow things are a little different. If you have trouble with local neds,
They usually just attack you, and not bother with the harassment part.
And knives are fairly common place. In fact no self respecting ned,

I understand the plight of the homeowner, but killing's just a bit extreme.

In this case a good tasering or spraying of mace would have been appropriate response for the mischief of the likes of Chav Chavington Chavworthy III. But then again, I don't know how accessible a taser or mace is in the U.K.

Alternately, if homeowner knew that this was a regular enough occurrence... I'm sure he could utilize some fairly common household appliances. If you know the schedule of when the YOB is coming by, get a nice scalding hot pot of tea ready or perhaps let your clothes iron warm for 5 minutes up in advance on its highest setting. A face full of either isn't likely to kill somebody, but they'd be highly discouraged from ever coming back to your door. They might even leave a nice mark too, which may serve well in discouraging other miscreants.

I can definitely see actions like these being acceptable for someone urinating through your letter box. Its a despicable act. But killing is even more despicable. If the police aren't doing anything then battle it out if need be, just don't kill them unless they put your life in real danger.
