High-level talks between NATO and Russia could see the Russian bear coming back to Afghanistan after 20 years of healing her ragged wounds. Like a wary bear checking out new territory, the elites of Russia are reviewing new proposals to successfully invade and pacify Afghanistan.

The new premise of war?

It's the drugs!

Russian concerns about the flow of heroin from Afghanistan's poppy fields would also be addressed through new co-operative agreements, officials said.

"The summit can mark a new start in the relationship between Nato and Russia," said Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the Nato secretary-general.

"We will hopefully agree on a broad range of areas in which we can develop practical co-operation on Afghanistan, counter-terrorism, counter-narcotics."

source

For now all the support Russia will provide is secondary support like logistical help or materials.

A Nato spokesman said last night: "There are no plans to reintroduce Russian soldiers into Afghanistan – [it's] not part of Russia's intent, not Afghan, and not ours. Russians may get involved in training helicopter pilots if they provide some helicopters, but not in Afghanistan itself. In the past, Russians have collaborated on training counter-narcotics police outside of country. None of the initiatives on the table involve Russian troops in Afghanistan."

Vague talk from desperate NATO officials, but the fact that Russia is now touching Afghanistan with a 10 foot pole is nothing short of a marvel. Russia is like Randy Quaid to Evi Quaid's Afghanistan
(well it's
to me because I think it's funny)

I think the real reason is the new gas pipeline from russia to china. It runs smack through afghanistan. The drug control will be an added bonus is all.

Hmm, isn't natural gas just as valuable as oil?

I find it interesting the material you provided was from a meeting in 1998, about 4 years before the 2001-present war. Thanks it was a real eye opener, they've been lusting after Afghanistan for quite a while apparently. Follow the money indeed.

So the Russians think the threat in Afghanistan has downgraded (they must have because in 1998 they didn't know how the war would turn out, and if it could last as long as it did) and they are interested in their slice of the pie in the looting of Afghanistan.

It's not like your average Joe and Jane Afghanistani is going to see a paycheck in the mail, royalties for the extraction of their precious natural resources.

If these mining operations pollute your river water, as an uneducated Afghan, what do you do? It's not even your land, your country anymore.

Afghanistan has been invaded many times, its boundaries and governments almost always in dispute. Invaders include the Mughal rulers of South Asia, Russian Tsars, Soviet Union, British Empire, and currently a coalition force of NATO troops with UN-backing led by US armed forces.

A website alone does not validate or invalidate a source. Whether the article can be found on UPI, Associated Press Fox etc, one still has to examine the source and the content.

While the site's admin has written some blogs, whatreallyhappened.com is predominantly a site with links to articles not published by main stream sources.

Why did Russia invade in the first place? For the same reasons the American Govt has, strategically located geography, natural resources and the opium trade.

America: "Hey Russia want back in on Afghanistan?"

Russia: "Sure!"

America: "All you need to do is send in some of your troops to get killed so ours dont get killed as much."

Russia: "Ok!"

What was said above about strategically located geography - In winter Russia's ports usually freeze up. So, Russia has always had a desire to reach the warm Indian Ocean. It would e.g. fantasize about Cossaks getting off their horses at it. After Afghanistan, Russia would have gone into Pakistan. It's then unlikely that Russia would have then gone into India, as Pakistan has access to the Indian Ocean.
