More Moonbattery for you folks out there. If you want to advertise for a roommate, you are NOT allowed to decide who that is, or at least you are not allowed to advertise your choice.

Link-Michigan Woman Faces Civil Rights Charge for advertising for Christian roommate.

Snippet-

A civil rights complaint has been filed against a woman in Grand Rapids, Mich., who posted an advertisement at her church last July seeking a Christian roommate.

The ad "expresses an illegal preference for a Christian roommate, thus excluding people of other faiths,” according to the complaint filed by the Fair Housing Center of West Michigan.

I wonder if the advertisement was for a progressive Communist if the whole thing would have been overlooked.

Hmmm, next the government will have to create a bureucracy called the Roommate Placement Agency.

MOONBATTERY I say!

what the hell?

discrimination? thats hilarious the woman has the right to decide who she lives with its and extremely personal experience and as such it her right to advertise in any way she seeks.

if one takes a look at any adverrtisement for jobs for example every single ad out there is discriminatory to those people who do not have the qualifications that said advertiser is looking for.

both instance are seeking applicants to fill certain needs.

i am sick and tired of these people get the hell out of someone elses life and live your own.

meh............

Since she is, in essence renting a room, she can't discriminate.
How would you feel about "whites only".
Poor "christians". The most self pitying group in America.

Whites only would be fine. So would blacks only.

Ever heard of private property rights? Some people still value them.

Ever heard of institutionalized racism?
But that's just fine with the primatives. As long as YOU have the "freedom" to DENY "freedom" to someone else, you don't care.

Actually, when it comes to whom you want to share your living space with , it's my opinion you've every right to discriminate. Maybe you shouldn't advertise "only indigo coloured people need apply," but you can certainly disregard people based on your own preferences regardless of law.

Religion, however has nothing to do with race. I'm considering now taking an ad out seeking a cigar smoking atheistic person into bdsm (for the laughs) whom likes listening to Mr. Bungle, and see what happens. I'll be discriminating against non smokers, cigarette smokers, religious people, peoples sexual tastes and musical tastes.

Probably going to get yelled at for this >.>

If it is her house then she should be able to discriminate against whoever the hell she likes as she will be allowing them to live in her house with her. This anti-discrimination thing has gone way too far.

The lawyer they interviewed tried to make the point that it's ok to choose a christian roommate, just not ok under federal law to advertise for one.

Which is just so much BS. How would you get to choose? If you ask if they are christian during an interview and turn them down they will say you discriminated. You'd have to try and coax it out of them indirectly. Who has time for that sort of BS.

But here's the really big issue IMO. The ruling by the now so-called fair housing group seems to also mean that it would be illegal to advertise for a male or female roommate since that would be sex discrimination.

From their website:

The Fair Housing Center of West Michigan (FHCWM) is a private, non-profit organization established in 1980 to ensure equal housing opportunity as guaranteed under federal, state, and local fair housing laws. That purpose is accomplished through the Center's continuing operation of programs directed at enforcement and education, based on Title VIII of the 1968 Civil Rights Act (amended 1988), commonly referred to as the Fair Housing Act. The Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination based upon race, color, religion, gender, familial status, national origin, and/or disability status; the Elliot Larsen Civil Rights Act further prohibits discrimination based upon marital status and age, and local ordinances prohibiting discrimination based upon sexual orientation and source of income.

The federal fools can't see that the bottom line for this will be that no one ever has a roommate in the future?

Well since YOU brought up blacks only.

Hmmm.

US Congressional Black Caucus
National Association for the Advancement of Colored People or is that (Communists and Progressives)
Black Entertainment Television
Black Scholarship Fund
etc
etc
etc
Careful, your black theology skirt is showing.

OH I forgot, white people cannot have their civil rights infringed upon according to the Departme nt of InJustice.

For the sake of clarity the article also states:

But Joel Oster, an attorney with the Alliance Defense Fund, which is representing the woman free of charge, describes the case as "outrageous."

Oster said he hopes the case will eventually be dropped and that he's sent a letter to the state asking the authorities to dismiss the case as groundless.

I see this less as the end of freedom and more of a case of a very misguided civil servant who lacks any understanding of the law and even less an understanding of what America is actually about.

The key here is the following:

Harold Core, director of public affairs with the Michigan Department of Civil Rights, told the Grand Rapids Press that the Fair Housing Act prevents people from publishing an advertisement stating their preference of religion, race or handicap with respect to the sale or rental of a dwelling.

I doubt that it will take very long for the poor wording of this statute is changed to clarify that a roommate situation is exempt from this.

Just to look at this from the other side. If one was going to apply to an advertisement for a room it might save a lot of time wasting if one was aware that the person requiring a room-mate was a Christian, Muslim, Pagan or whatever else.

I think it is a good thing that advertisers should advise applicants of their leanings - forewarned is forearmed

What planet are you from?

No one has the freedom, nor the right, to move into my house if I dislike them for whatever the reason.

It's not institutionalized racism, you may want to go look up the definition of that term so you dont look like a fool. Again.

My house, my right to be selective who stays here.
If I choose to discriminate against renting a room to people who were born in West Virginia with double jointed toes and likes the color yellow, that's my right. Having someone live under your roof is much different than dealing with someone out in public. Its a good idea to know that you can tolerate sharing a home with that person first, and if having the same religious beliefs is something that you need to ensure that you are compatible with that person, well, I see nothing wrong with that.

Don't you just love how people on ATS can post a link to a Right-wing blog or website and it's perfectly acceptable but if you link it to a left-wing blog or website your thread will be torn apart by them calling those links worthless and Communist propaganda. ATS boy-o-boy.

Because, you know, you would feel so left out if you didn't get to room with a hardcore Jesus-freak.

Or that some black guy would want to move in with a member of the neo-nazi party, how dare he be discriminated against!

Look, I don't move into the ghetto for a reason - suburban white boy who doesn't enjoy confusing his vices with dry-wall. I'm sure there's a reason they don't seek me out when they have a vacancy after "the man" took their buddy away.

If I'm looking for a conservative buddy to room with, I'm going to pick a conservative buddy to room with - no need to waste the time of socialists, they don't stand a chance regardless of what the ad says. It's for their protection as well as mine. No good will come out of such an unholy alliance.

Oh come on now are you serious? People have every right to decide on who they want to share their personal space with. Would you want to live with an ex-murderer? Would you want to live with a Conservative? I know I wouldn't.

I should be allowed to post something like this if I chose too.

I am seeking a roommate in _____, Michigan. The rent is $500 per month and you pay 50% of utilities. I would prefer no Blacks, Arabs, Jews, Christians, Mormons, Republicans, Conservatives, Gays, Transgender, redheads, fats, Asians, Mexicans, Catholics, Muslims, no religious people at all, no excessive tattoos, no excessive piercings, no long hair(men), no bikers, no biker chicks, no Goths, no emos, no stinky people, no old people. If you fit one of those categories please don't respond, otherwise please contact me at (###)-###-####.

We should be allowed to be as picky as we want about who lives with us.

So I'm a troll for stating a fact!?

It's not like I care what people like you believe anyways. Stating facts is perfectly acceptable on ATS.
