Explosions detected off the Northern coast of France

This is very curious. I have not seen this on an earthquake listing before.

Possible explosion? Probable explosion?

Does anyone have any idea what may be the cause of this? I can't find anything about any explosions off France. Is France testing nukes underground like the States?

The location of these is just off Le Havre for today's 'explosion' and just off Dieppe for the 'explosion' on the 21st.

I would have to say that nuke testing would be the only answer for that equasion, unless there are two new underwater volcanoes that have just made thier debut. Highly doubtful however

Given that the depth of these siezmic occurances read (both of them) at 0.0, I think underwater nuclear detonations are the winning events occuring here...

Well, normally we'd be waiting for you to tell us what it means!
Very interesting at this point, hopefully, it's nothing.

Maybe I'm just ignorant, but I have no idea what those numbers mean.

Secret channel tunnels being made.........
...maybe.

It could be an escape tunnel for Sarkozy's government after the French rise up against him and he flees to Great Britain.

I wouldn't really worry about it, we aren't in the cold war or anything so it's probably no big deal.

Basically the one today was an equivalent of a Magnitude 2.3 and the one on the 21st was the evivalent of a Magnitude 2.6. Neither of then exactly huge but:

2.5 84.4 kg (186 lb) 355 MJ World War II blockbuster bomb

Source: Wikipedia

That seems to be too large for a construction blast i would have thought, but since I am not aware of there being another channel tunnel under construction perhaps the 'natives' of Calais camps have moved along the coast and are now busy building their own as suggest above.

- like that one. But if he flees to Britain he is entering the camp of the enemy.

I thought we (UK) were still in a cold war with France as we have been for centuries.

Is it in the realm of possibility that it could be left over WW2 ordnance going off?

The depth has in both cases been fixed/changed to 1.0km

Latest Quake - 10.25.2010 - 3.0

First Quake - 10.21.2010 - 3.2

Above are the links to emsc-csem.org - Scientific Data of the Earthquake

The website in the OP is the only one i found mentioning explosions. Found nothing in the French local media

That both events have the same depth / had their depth fixed both to 1.0km is kinda suspicious.
But i don't think Mister Sarkozy or any French would be crazy enough to set of an A-bomb on their coasts - incroyable!

I was searching explosions/earthquakes and found a couple of aticles on nuke testing as a possibility.

www.keralamonitor.com...

Don't know that this is a great source of info, but speculates that approx. 25% of quakes are due to testing.

On a serious note:

I thought France stopped nuclear testing in the 90's and i dont recall any news of their testing restarting. Surely there would of been some type of announcement pertaining to this.

does that coast line look familiar
in that photo??

It looks like the coastline for the
Allied Forces Landing June 6, 1944
in Normandy.

Don't think German Artillery shells
could have made it that far off the coast.
Maybe I'm wrong.

I don't think it to be old ordinance.

I also seriously doubt France would
conduct nuclear testing on such a
historic battle front from WW2.
Maybe I'm wrong on that too.

Mm, 1.0 is not one of the EMSC default depths. They use 2, 10 and 35 so that is a little curious. I note that the UK information is depth 0 in both cases.

The EMSC Magnitudes seem to be quite a bit higher putting the first one as 8 x stronger and the second one as 11.2 x stronger.

No I don't seriously think France would be testing nukes at the entrance of Le Havre, they might blow up a ferry.

You say it would not be artillery shells/ordinance but actually maybe that is the answer. The UK estimate of the magnitude would be of the right order for old bombs. Maybe they have been doing some disposal.

Probably digging with unknown method of tunneling or constructing.
my 2 cents
