Winston Churchill once said: "When you are winning a war almost everything that happens can be claimed to be right and wise." It is common practice in conflicts that governments ignore and cover up potential war crimes committed by their troops, which otherwise could reduce support for the war both on the ground and at home.

Therefore, the recent release of classified documents by WikiLeaks is not a reckless endangerment of troops as advocated by the American, Australian and British governments, but a necessity to ensure justice and morality is upheld and reinforce our position as protectors of the Iraqi people against violence and oppression (See no evil: secret files show how US ignored Iraq torture, 23 October). There is no stronger incentive for a shift towards extremism than witnessing alleged abuses first-hand, which then remain unpunished.

Yes, Iraqi militants will use the release to try and rally support. However, with so many potential cases of human rights abuses revealed, this is an opportunity for governments to take action against perpetrators, which would demonstrate to everyone that we are there to help the Iraqi people and are committed to treating all crimes – whether carried out by our own troops or by the enemy – with the severity and disdain they deserve.

Leaks on War Fuel Rivalries in Baghdad

The classified U.S. documents released over the weekend—including graphic depictions of torture at the hands of the Iraqi security services—have roiled the already-tense political situation in Iraq, as political parties struggle to form a new government.

Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has been trying to cobble together a governing coalition since an inconclusive parliamentary vote in March. Yet Mr. Maliki's critics—who have long alleged that security forces under his command target political rivals, in particular, rival Sunni supporters—are using the cache of nearly 400,000 classified documents as fuel to keep him from another term.

There has been no evidence found in the documents that Mr. Maliki was aware of the grisly acts of torture and beatings. However, the timing of the documents' release comes just as his Shiite bloc, known as State of Law, has made gains in securing the majority of parliamentary seats needed to form a new government. As prime minister, Mr. Maliki was commander-in-chief of the Iraqi forces during from the 2006 to 2009 period covered in the leaked papers.

The true situation of the Iraq war has been exposed for the whole world which was dying to see all along.

The puppet Iraqi PM, Nouri al-Maliki, exploited every grisly method possible to retain office that Saddam Hussein wouldn't have even done!
