BREAKING! Indonesia Raises Volcano Alert Level To Max!! Merapi Is About To Explode!

JAKARTA, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia on Monday raised alert status of a volcano located in a densely populated area of Central Java to top alert, and asked for a massive evacuation for more than ten thousands people living in the slope of the mountain, officials said. The most volatile Mount Merapi of 2,968 meters high has shown increased seismic activity over the past week, head of volcanology observer at the National Volcanology who goes with a single name Kristianto said. "We have raised the alert status to the higest-level this morning, this means that the mount can erupt at any time," Kristianto told Xinhua by phone.

Could someone tell me a bit about this volcano and what we could expect from an eruption? Has it erupted in recent history and what was the effects???

Sorry for asking but i wouldnt really know where to start if i researched myself!

Mt. Merapi is located in central Java. It is a conical volcano that has erupted quite regularly for the past 500 years. There was a notable eruption in 2006, but not a large scale one by any measure. An earthquake struck about 30 miles south and reduced the lava volume significantly about a week before it did overflow. There are about 30 million people in central Java alone. A large scale eruption would be absolutely devastating to say the least.

Thanks. Browsing on my phone so I had a hard time looking for it. Was kinda hard to see what the image was. But holding the phone on a distant made the image more clear. And yeah, doesn't look to good. Alot of smoke, just like it was on Island.

Merapi volcano, Indonesia was raised to the highest level 4 alert today. At least 40,000 people have been advised to evacuate from a 10 km radius around the volcano. About 500 volcanic earthquakes were recorded over the weekend. Magma has been rising towards the surface and is about a kilometre below the crater. High risk zones are on the southern, southeastern and eastern slopes of the volcano. At the end of September inflation rate of the volcano was measured at 6 mm/day. On 24th October the inflation rate was 420 mm/day. Since the alert level was raised last week there has been increasing incidence of a glowing lava dome. Some lava avalanches can be heard from the observation post. Level 4 alert means an eruption is possible within 24 hours.
