STOCKHOLM (AFP) – Tigers could become extinct within 12 years but a top level meeting in Russia next month could help reverse the decline, nature conservation body WWF said on Thursday.

"The worse scenario is that the tiger could be gone when the next year of the tiger comes along, in 12 years," said Ola Jennersten, head of the international nature conservation programme at WWF Sweden.

The organisation is leading a global campaign to attempt to double the number of tigers by 2022, when the next Chinese calendar year of the tiger comes around.

Only one thing to say: Fu*k Our Species.

Thanks.

ok I thought I'd contribute a bit more. This is downright disgusting. These precious and beautiful animals are being hunted down and murdered illegally and because of that, they are facing extinction.

How much longer will our species remain to be a destructive force on this planet? We wipe our our fellow Earth residents, we damage the Planet itself...how much longer can we go on doing this?

There's little chance of them going extinct as long as the US maintains up to 10000 in captivity. Over the years these poor creatures have fuelled elements of the tiger trade...supply and demand. In a way, many of them would be better off dead than kept in poor conditions in roadside attractions and used as status symbols for wealthy scumbags.

This isn't to say that the USA is alone in encouraging the declining populations. Tigers are kept as pets and showponies in South America, China and Africa.

The sad thing is that people keep being born and they need food and land to live on.

As one of the most beautiful animals in the world, this disgusts me. These creatures have survived and thrived in their habitat until us selfish creatures came in and destroyed it.

We are an unbelievably selfish creatures that are a cancer, wait till mother natures immune system kicks in. We will feel the same as how we make other creatures feel.

Thanks for the information though, hopefully this opens some more eyes.

Pred...

I heard on animal planet that there are more tigers in captivity in the u.s than there is in the wild, and the sad thing is these tiger would not survive if released back into the wild. These animals should not be owned by anyone they are used by people for their own obsession, they feel they have a special bond what a joke, they are used to make these people money and claim that the tigers are happy and secure my question is how can they be happy inside a cage?Tigers are beautiful dangerous animals that belong in their natural habitat not feeding somebody's obsession or wallet.
