That is what I believe it will come down to in the end. People will be so addicted that they will be mindless robots, handing over their soul and service in exchange for their daily 'fix'. Addiction is a hard thing to break free from. I know personally and I am proud to say I have been drug and alcohol free for almost a decade now. So no spliffy's for me. Cigarettes were even harder to break free from but eventually those chains were broken too, at least 4 years free from that now. My area of weakness will be food. I have never starved and I hope I never have to but I know tptb have this area covered as well.
