Well I was writing regards the present day.
I'm sure you will enjoy the new coalition.
It seems to be setting itself out to suit people of your mindset.

It's a shame that they are continuing with foreign aid, but yes I am very, very happy with our new government. Time to start firing the civil servants to save money.

With the national unemployment figure in American standing at 9.6 %, laziness nor drug addiction appear to be the mitigating issue. And that number does not reflect the countless people, here, who simply ran out of their benefits (26 weeks worth if I am not mistaken plus an extension due to the emergency level of unemployment). But even with the published number that is 96 out of 1,000 people that there is no available job for.

Factor that over the US population and that is almost 30,000,000 people - as a BEST CASE SCENARIO. And that is just one first world country.

This situation goes so far beyond generalizations as to be mind numbing. It's clear that the global economy is failing at an alarming rate and, I fear, sincerely fear, that those who are mocking the poor today, will find themselves sharing the same pains as those who have already fallen between the cracks.

If we don't educated ourselves, as a culture, and resolve to help those who need help, and to fix the things that are going so horribly wrong with the world economy, we'll only have ourselves to blame when our turn at the dole window comes and we're suddenly labeled as "lazy" or "unworthy".

There was a time when a larger number of people gave to their community. It's not always about donating money to help the poor. people once gave their free time to help those in need. Sometimes directly or by participating in community groups that had goals of improving the community or groups within it.

Sadly, over the last few decades Christianity in America has embraced self enrichment or become a huge arena entertainment activity and abandoned the charity message. Add to that the rights tendency to call many community organizations socialist to discourage what they fear would be an increase number of people who traditionally vote against the Republicans involved in both their community and politics..

Of course the destruction of the middle class over the last 30 years through tax subsidized off shoring, stagnating wages for all but the top earners and a increasing amount of time spent at work have decreased both the ability to donate money and time to help the poor and their community.

Hmm.
With how you are coming across,I'd say daddy has taken care of all your financial needs.
Shame he didn't spend more time with you, instead of just money taking care of things.
I'm sure other ATS'ers know where I'm coming from.

Not saying to insult just stating opinion.

I do not think people have ever cared.

Being homeless must be absolute horrible, and you see all you lot laughing at these people, just sums up humans, scum.

History has shown that when a culture (pick one, anyone) is at its peak economically, people have the time and resources to do great things on both a smaller personal level and on a larger public level. People have more time and resources to pursue the arts and further develop public works for the benefit of the whole society. When a culture is in decline and have less resources and time to devote to such pursuits, naturally the daily concerns for survival take the forefront. Charity starts at home in this circumstance. During a cultural downturn, people may be more likely to sympathize, but competition and survival comes first. The overall population may care, but unable to help. It eventually becomes "dog eat dog". When you find yourself in a shanty town slum or a tent city, you may have a new found respect for the poor and homeless, but because of the survival instinct, you have to put sympathy aside. Such a situation may cause people to help each other, but only if there is a tangible benefit, unlike using disposable income or spare time to help out people you normally wouldn't interact with.

And what makes you Superior than other Human beings? Does your life as a human being worth more than to your fellow Human being??

Hiya Doc, I know its unlikely, but imagine if this 'glorious new government' haha dont make me laugh, brought in national conscription, should give some of the annoying little tory boys something to do instead of p**sing people off with outrageous unhuman comments. Just a general comment not directed at anyone in particular.

I am going to with hold my true thoughts to this statement because there are terms and conditions here but are serious? You do know that most homeless people aren't drug addicts or alcoholics. Way to stereo-type.

As someone who works in a welfare office, I have a unique perspective. Most people who are homeless or have trouble getting by have major emotional issues, psychological or mental health issues. Many can't read and/or follow basic directions. They will get a job for 2 days and get fired. Many don't have marketable skills.

Also, also, because many of them have been poor for awhile, they cannot afford to take care of themselves and their teeth properly and it shows.

I firmly believe that there is a huge discrimination against looks, you rarely see a stunning looker come in. Though people whould not be hiring on looks.

What they need is training and mental health access and career training. My state got smart and not only provided classes to teach people how to create resumes, but now provides training for the people on how to keep their job. By updating their skills and workplace behavior and attitude.

The people who are smart, and hardworking, rarely stay long. We will see them leave again in a few weeks. But those with major issues, are around for a long time.

Societies just don't put enough emphasis on getting people the mental health therapy they need. There are so many people with anger issues and I smell several people a day reeking of alcohol.

It helps to have a good community where people help other people. We have homeless shelters, food kitchens etc. We also need a government that cares more about people than money and power.

Sorry for delay in replying, was tidying up the cloister room.

National Service is something I would agree with if was to be re-introduced.
An eye opener for both ends of the scale

Though having hit 40 this year,if conscripted I'd most likely end up in the home guard.
More of a Wilson than a Mainwaring though.

More and more people are losing their homes due to foreclosure and job loss. Every day, companies are shutting down and all those people are out of work. As for being lazy, most people would rather work. The problem is that the job market sucks. When you go to fill out an application, you already have about a thousand people ahead of you. There really aren't a lot of jobs to go around. More and more people are going on assistance, too. There's only so much money for that. What they really need to do is stop sending our jobs out of the country. We need the work here.

I don't believe that's a fair call. Many homeless people are also mentally handicapped, and no it's not their own fault. Unfortunately many of those who could be cared for aren't treated properly due to financial pressure on their families and the toll it takes. A doctor may even misdiagnose the true problem. I also think drugs and alcohol are more a result of the problem, not so much the cause.
