Obama did not lower taxes for anyone! please list the bills he signed stating he did????? your only referances are budgets and/or plans. budgets and plans are not actions. please get your facts strate.

The only thing obama did, and was very sneaky about it was cut everyones taxes by $500 a year. Later you find out he decreased your tax deferral by $500 not taxes. So you sow an increases in your pay check each month but you had to pay the $500 back at the end of the year in taxes. Smart Guy.

It's funny...
The Obama hate corps is going strong. When proven wrong about taxes they say things about not wanting to eat the master's crumbs.

So full of hate, some of you are. I applaud those big enough to admit they were wrong.
The rest of you...well, I'm only saying this for your own benefit. Drop the resentment before it is too late. It may prevent good things from happening to you in the future.

I'm sorry but you are either lying or your employer is ripping you off. Tax rates have not changed at all since Obama became president. It reminds me of a friend I had that worked in a warehouse all day where they played Rush Limbaugh through the speaker system. He got in an arguement with me saying that Hillary Clinton's health care changes had cut his check so bad that he couldn't live anymore. Funny thing, I told him since Hillary Clinton talked a lot but no change in health care ever happened. He told me "Oh yes it did, I can show you in my check". I don't know when people will quit listening to these right wing liars posing as entertainers and brainwashing people who think they are doing the best thing for their country.

Republicans have always supported higher taxes on lower and middle income earners.

Another thing that is amusing to me today is exactly what it takes to piss off a given nation:

In France, you have the entire country in chaos today because the government wanted to raise the retirement age two years. There's a rush on fuel, air-service is being seriously cut, students are making human walls in front of their schools and workers are setting fires to keep people out of oil refineries.

All of this over an increase to 62 in the retirement age! I'm in my upper-20s and I'll be lucky to retire before 70 and I know it. Wow.

In America, the party in power is getting sacked primarily because of taxes, and not just tax rates, which are historically not that high and globally insanely low, but the fact that taxes exist in the first place! This government is giving you health care options you've never had before, getting you out of an illegal war in Iraq, turning around the worst economy since the depression and cut taxes for the majority of people, but the fact that taxes exist has suddenly become a rallying cry against them. Wow again.

Meanwhile here in the UK, we're looking at a big austerity plan, higher taxes, lower services, and a shaky pound sterling for the next few years, and we're all for it because in fact that's why we elected the government we did. We're even making massive cuts in our military because it's the right thing to do. What do you think would happen in the US if anyone suggested such things?

Bush didn't factor in the cost of the war...he cheated. While Obama does include the cost of war.

If taxes have not changed since Obama became president, then how were they supposedly lowered?

Shouldn't the title of the thread be "Didn't know Obama stayed the tax rate"?

are taxes are lower because we depend on ourself to save and plan for retirement. those french people sound like a bunch of wining kids. save your own money and dont depend on the goverment.... again taxes are not going down. please stop saying that as of now they are going up Jan 1st 2011 and if we are lucky the GOP will pass a bill to keep them the same as they are now. obama just needs to sign. but we most wait for Nov 2

A big part of avoiding austerity is to not permit your government to write blank checks from the get-go.

If they can take whatever they want they'll spend whatever they want. Regardless of perceived frivolity or necessity this always comes to a head. It might take 200 years or just 30-50 years but it always does.

France getting uppity about raising the retirement age is ridiculous. they're effectively asking their government to run the country into the ground. Just like the imbeciles in Greece who looted and rioted for more dependence and spending.

What the hell does looting and destruction of private property accomplish anyway? I never understood that reaction.

Unless you're rich, your taxes aren't going up. You've listened to so many radio talking heads (who are rich) who will have a tax increase and aren't happy about it, that you think they're actually talking points concerning you and your situation.

It's what the Left has been saying for a while...WHY are people on the Right who aren't rich...fighting for people who aren't even in the same pay grade as them.

Large businesses and rich people are the ones the tax hikes will affect. It's them who are financing all of the propaganda about being robbed. If you look at the chart provided on the front page even, unless you make over $250K your taxes will not go up and may even go down.

Do you see how silly some of these Right-Wingers are looking. For example; the person who posted the chart did so to show how Obama raised taxes. When if you look at the chart, he actually LOWERED taxes for the average people!

On another note...you do know that taxes is the way the government pays for things right? Yes we can moan that higher taxes will be paying for other peoples healthcare. But what about the pink elephant in the room: The Iraq War. Keep in mind everything the government does must be paid for somehow, how else are we supposed to pay for this ten year war?

What's going to keep us in debt is NOT raising taxes.

Well, first of all, you live in the UK. Sorry, I hear it used to be a pretty cool place.

Second, we don't want your stinky socialized healthcare, and never said we did. The only people who don't have health "care" in this country are the people who could not find a full time job doing something they were good at, because if they did, they would have benefits that include health "care". But somehow because they didn't do that, but I did, I'm supposed to feel bad and resposnible? That's what charity is for. Oh well, then there's everyone else... whether you are here legally or illegally you can walk into any hospital emergency room and be taken care of, including surgeries, transplants and medications. The only difference is that the hospital actually tries to recoup some of those costs by asking people to pay for their care. Some people can and do, some people can't and don't. And it's still waaaaaaaaaay better than what you people in the UK get. Again, sorry about all that.

Now, there are people who own businesses in America, and somebody decided to make every single employer an agent of the government who can take taxes out of your agreed-upon-pay and send it to the government. It's ridiculous that people expect the government to take care of them in the first place. It's not the governments business what I eat, how much I spend, how much I save, where I work, what I do with my free time. I don't need a nanny, like you do in the UK.

The government's J-O-B is to protect us from enemies, foreign and domestic. In other words, keep criminals in jail and go after people who commit crimes. Personally, they are not even very good at this.

Please PLEASE show me who is telling you this! facts are facts. your going to be paying 3-5% more if things dont change!!!!! stop with the talking points OPEN YOUR EYES PLEASE!!!!

And again i dont know what chart you are talking about, but obama did not lower taxes. Read the OPs artical he linked to. It even says it there. Obama lowered taxes by changing the tax withholding rate. Thats not lowering taxes. you just have to re pay it when tax time comes.

in lame mans terms he made it where they took less out of your check so you can spend more now but you still owe the goverment that money you spent. ITS NOT A TAX CUT!

take money from one pocket and put it in the other. thats all. its a shell game. you got scamed by your dear leader!

I cant belive the New York Times is playing into this. Do they not know what a change in the withholdings does...??? You still have to pay!

I couldn't agree with your more mate. We seem to have a cyclical pattern in the UK, where we spend like drunken sailors for dozens of years, then have to go through a period of austerity when it catches up with us. I would note though that this was largely due to the idiotic super-welfare state, and military spending not the nationalizations that were done after the post-WWII austerity ended, the majority of those actually made the government money and part of why we're broke now is because we privatized almost all of them.

Don't get me wrong, I am a Democratic Socialist, I believe in a certain amount of state welfare, but what we've had here is lunacy, and with the government having nothing but taxes to bring in income, it was a formula for failure.

I think you're right on the French too, they are only hurting themselves. The destruction they are causing is costing their economy, not to mention lost productivity and tourism income. It really is just idiotic and I am at just as much of a loss to explain it.
