End of the Earth Postponed

It's a good news/bad news situation for believers in the 2012 Mayan apocalypse. The good news is that the Mayan "Long Count" calendar may not end on Dec. 21, 2012 (and, by extension, the world may not end along with it). The bad news for prophecy believers? If the calendar doesn't end in December 2012, no one knows when it actually will — or if it has already.

A new critique, published as a chapter in the new textbook "Calendars and Years II: Astronomy and Time in the Ancient and Medieval World" (Oxbow Books, 2010), argues that the accepted conversions of dates from Mayan to the modern calendar may be off by as much as 50 or 100 years. That would throw the supposed and overhyped 2012 apocalypse off by decades and cast into doubt the dates of historical Mayan events. (The doomsday worries are based on the fact that the Mayan calendar ends in 2012, much as our year ends on Dec. 31.)

Hmmm? Isn't this interesting? First they say the Mayan calender runs out on 21 DEC 2012 and now they say it doesn't. I've been reading books on this subject and checking out websites about Nibiru all for nothing. I'm one of those who is disappointed by this news. I thought it was going to be the beginning of a new age.

Well, all I got to say is better luck next time. Maybe this is a hoax to catch us off guard. Whatever the reason, I'm really, really sad at this news.

The Mayan had many calenders? Right? I don't see how this one predicts the end of the Earth. Since I'm not a Mayan.

This is actually really good news, we need to detach from that madness. You want a new era in your life?, you can make it happen within you, you don't need an external source telling you what or how you gonna experience your reality. Now if there is really no deadline, its for the better because now we stand on our tiptoes, watchful and mindful of every moment, expecting anything will happen. This is really a good thing, cheers

Did you ever consider that perhaps we just turned down a different timeline?

Just because someone has reached a different date doesn't make them correct!

But I know what you mean. It's obvious that a significant amount of people are desperate for humanity to fundamentally change for the better - and I do believe we create our own reality...........

The Mayan calendar was never supposed to end in december 2012.
13.0.0.0.0 (21/12/2012) is the beginning of the 5th world, and thus the ending of the 4th.
It was never meant as an apocalypse but as a change in people.

The mayan calender is a series of several calenders intertwined with one another. Only one of them, the long count calender runs out on that date, and like all calenders, it simply resumes again. The other just continue as they normally would

That's change I can sort of believe in.

This is some of the worst news possible. Now it gives 2012 believers the ability to keep making up dates when the previous one doesn't pan out. They'll just keep saying that the correlation was wrong and that the actual date is just around the corner.

I want to go out like Woody Harrelson did in 2012.

What better way is there to "go" than to see "it" coming and you can't do anything about it?

2012 is going to come and go like Y2K did.

I don't think it was meant for usa to exactly know what's going to happen.

Judgment Day! May 21, 2011 is 1 1/2 years closer. Wonder what's going to happen then? I know. We'll go to bed and wake up and it'll be May 22, eat breakfast and get about the days business.

My great suspicion is that the 2012 date hype is another strategy by the Illuminati to both distract people and to discourage them from taking action against their heinous agenda.

If we don't want to become total slaves in the feudal/tyrannical insane global agenda of the psycopaths, we have to do something about it, not wait for the 'universe' to do it for us.

Time to wake up and get active.

I would have to say the 2012 "hype" stems not from some zionist conspiracy, but from truth-seeking, mystically-intrigued individuals like you and I.

I keep seeing "THEY told us Dec 2012" now "THEY say that is wrong."
Who are "THEY?"
You mean the hundreds of individual scientists, astronomers, archaeologists, historians, ethnographers and other such specialists who have all held unique points of view on the subject?

The whole 2012 end of the world drama began due to people's willingness to accept what they were told without proper research or peer-review. It began because people like you and I, yearning for answers to the unknown bit into what tasted good at the moment. There has never been a mass consensus that the Mayan calendar ended on Dec. 21, 2012. There has been even LESS consensus on exactly what that means.

Think about it in these terms. Remember 2000, Y2K, all the computer software was not designed to handle the "switch" to the 2000's properly. It was not because computers stopped working on that date, or that they were incapable of continuing on. It had to do with software engineers not planning that far into the future.

How long did you expect the Indians of Central and South America to make their "calendar?"
Had they decided to track their cyclical understand of time, nature and being into the year 3000, would that then be the end of the world?

I do not mean to direct this solely at you, I just get flustered when I read so many comments about the Indians of Central and South America that is just plain fantasy or misunderstanding.

The biggest being, the Maya just "disappeared." Inter-tribal conflict, the Spanish and Portuguese conquests, disease, drought and famine had a "little" something to do with them "disappearing."

Those that survived generally mixed with the remaining population, becoming mestizo (half Indian, Half European or Black). There are still pockets of Indians that are identical to the Maya in physicality and geography. Much like there are still Native Americans in the United States.

Perhaps it has something to do with the Federal reserves charter ending around that time. -Or was that just a hoax?

aaaahhhhhh man, I'm in deep trouble now.
That $100,000.00 I borrowed from the mafia
wasn't due for payback until Dec 22, 2012.
Now this means Big Tony is gonna show up
looking for his money. So if I don't post on
ATS after 12/22/12, you'll know he broke
my fingers as well as my kneecaps.
Why couldn't they just have stuck
with the plan?? geez

Hmm. They have texts talking about the sun falling into the dark rift. This is a very specific occurrence that only happens once every ca. 26,000 years. And that is happening on December 21st, 2012. That eliminates all doubt in my mind about whether the calender is wrong.

Oh good... A 50 to 100 year extension for the doomsday is coming predictions. And I was so looking forward to January, 2013 so that we could get past all this and move onto other subjects of discussion.

Yay us!

Just because someone has reached a different date doesn't make them correct!

That's quite true. That holds for the 2012 date as well as any other. There are lots of reasons to suppose that the correlation between the calendars is faulty, or should we say difficult to determine.
