Up to 17 people have been killed and 40 hurt in a car
bomb in the Iraqi town of Hilla coalition officials have said. Hilla is near a main coalliton outpost for recon and the area is heavily patrolled

"We know that it was a strong explosion," said Lt Col Robert Strzelecki, spokesman for the Polish-led force that patrols the area.Earlier, one
person was killed and 18 people, including the culture minister of the pro-American Kurdistan Democratic Party, were injured when a car bomb exploded
in the Kurdish town of Irbil in the north.

The explosion happened on a busy street in the centre of a mainly Shia Muslim town about 60 miles south of the capital, Baghdad. Saturday's bomb in
Hilla went off after dark in a town that had been relatively quiet, The blast comes from a upsurge of violence in the final daysleading upto the
US-led coalition transfers sovereignty to an interim Iraqi government.
